1. Gideonette De La Rey in Meerkat Maantuig (2017)

When young Gideonette’s father is killed in a freak accident, she retreats to a dark place until her mother sends her to live with her grandparents in the Magoebaskloof forest. There, she makes a friend who shows her a new world and helps her overcome her fear when he introduces her to his moonship. 2. Arya Stark in Game of Thrones

3. Lila in My Brilliant Friend

This stunning adaptation of Italian author Elena Ferrante’s first Neapolitan novel shows the unfolding of Elena and Lila’s friendship through childhood and teens. Elena’s our narrator, and she’s looking back on her and Lila’s life in the neighbourhood where they grew up, in a working-class part of Naples in the 50s and 60s.
