4 shows to watch if you love travel
While Sex and the City had ladies around the world clamouring to get to the Big Apple and Game of Thrones had fans traipsing around Northern Ireland and Croatia whispering “valar morghulis”, there are plenty more series on Showmax to inspire your wanderlust.
If you’ve fallen in love with the destinations from your favourite series just as much as their main characters, don’t let all your time invested in bingewatching time go to waste. Use it to help you choose your next holiday destination, says Nicky Potgieter, Leisure Marketing Leader Flight Centre South Africa.
“Plan a holiday where you can get up close to some of those iconic set locations used for filming. Many are easily accessible for die-hard fans to visit.”
If you love travel, here are Potgieter’s top Showmax series recommendations with film locations that will inspire you long after the closing credits:
1. The Young Pope
This highly publicised drama series stars Jude Law as the first American pontiff, Lenny Belardo, and follows his journey as the newly elected Pius XIII, and his resistance to the Vatican stewards. This is an excellent show for anyone who is a fan of conspiracy dramas, and a wonderful introduction for your trip to Rome. Watch now »
2. Younger
Younger is a romantic comedy-drama that revolves around a woman, Liza, who lies about her age to score a job – and a new life – in the big city. And the city in question, New York, is as much of a character in the show as any one of Liza’s paramours. From the soaring skyscrapers of downtown Manhattan to the enchanting Seaglass Carousel in Battery Park where Liza and Charles have their long-awaited first date, to the iconic piano bar Marie’s Crisis where the cast show off their singing chops in Season 6, Younger will have you swooning about the Big Apple. Watch now »
3. Vikings
This award-winning series based on the bloody journey of Norse legend Ragnar Lothbrok sparked a cultural following and new interest in the history of the Vikings.
While the series was mostly filmed at Luggala in Ireland, some additional background shots and epic battle scenes were filmed in the icy countryside of western Norway. Watch now »
4. Westworld
If you feel as though the only possible satisfaction you can get from Westworld is by enjoying yourself on one of its wild west sets in the US, then by all means, the option is there. Most of Season 1 was filmed on location in eastern Utah around Moab, which doubled up for those sweeping, breathtaking panoramas of Westworld. (Tragically, one of the sets in California burned down in the recent wildfires.) Watch now »
If you’re yet to add some of these top Showmax series to your must-watch list, why not download them onto your tablet or phone for your next holiday? They’ll keep you entertained while on a flight layover or during a night in after a busy day of sightseeing.
