Chilling trailer highlights shocking women abuse stats in SA

The Handmaid’s Tale has been praised by critics for its unflinching look at a dystopian future America where woman are stripped of their independence and abused and enslaved.

While the series is fantasy, the series brings up some very real issues – issues that are all too familiar to South Africans.

South Africa’s femicide rate is five times the global average – a horrifying 12.1 per 100 000 in 2016 against a global figure of 2.6. A woman is murdered by her intimate partner every eight hours.

With the launch of the third season of The Handmaid’s Tale on Monday, 10 June, Showmax has partnered with People Against Women Abuse (POWA) to raise awareness of these horrifying statistics and assist women in abusive situations to find the help they need.

Women who need help or information can contact POWA via their website, or the helpline on 081 383 7698.
