Showmax supports a number of devices that connect to the internet, including Apple and Android smartphones and tablets; personal computers; certain smart TVs (see a full list of the TVs here); DStv Exploras; and media players such as Apple TV and Chromecast devices plus gaming consoles including the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Bonus: it’s possible to watch on two devices at once on the same subscription!
Check your internet connection
Showmax streams shows through the internet, so you’ll need a reliable internet connection to watch. Your connection should have a minimum speed of 2 megabits per second (Mbps), though an uncapped 4Mbps connection or faster is recommended for the best experience.
To watch on a laptop or personal computer, go to www.showmax.com (the web player). For streaming or downloading on a smartphone, tablet or media player, you’ll need to download the app. The app is free for all iOS and Android devices, and available to install from your app store. Find out more on how to download the app here.
Before watching, set up individual profiles for the different people who will be watching Showmax on your subscription. It is possible to set up 5 different profiles on each subscription, so you, your partner and your kids could each have their own profile. The benefit of the Showmax profiles feature is that each person keeps their place in the series they’re watching and will get new shows recommended to them based on their viewing habits. Profiles also protect kids from inappropriate content – they will only have access to shows that are relevant for their age group. Find out more about profiles here.
Curate a list of the shows you want to watch later on a Watchlist. Each profile gets their own Watchlist, so each person in your family gets their own personal line-up of shows to binge on when they’ve got the time. Here’s how to use the Watchlist feature.
Browse Series, Movies or Kids’ Shows by clicking on each one in the menu bar on the top of your screen at www.showmax.com. Choose from one of 22 genres; one of four sections (Best of British, kykNET, Mzansi and Hollywood) and one of seven languages including English, Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa.
The amount of data you’ll use when watching Showmax depends on how much you watch and the quality setting you choose. The minimum you’ll use is 300MB per hour, if you watch at a low quality setting (this is fine if you’ll be using a small screen, such as your smartphone), and the maximum is around 1.5GB per hour. Luckily, Showmax apps include an option to cap bandwidth. This allows you to limit the amount of data used per hour. Supported apps include: iOS, Android and Apple TV. The option is available under the app settings menu. Bandwidth capping is also available on the web player in the player settings menu. Read more about how to manage your data here.
To stream, simply click on the blue PLAY NOW button on the episode of a series or the movie you want to start watching. If you’ve capped your bandwidth, or are in a Wi-Fi zone, you won’t have to worry about how much data you use, and you’re ready to binge!
But if you’ll be somewhere without an internet connection later (such as on a flight or in the car), download up to 25 episodes of a series or movies to watch offline for free. If you download while you’ve got Wi-Fi, the downloading will be free, too. Here’s the low-down on Showmax downloads.
Go to www.showmax.com to get your binge on now, and you’ll get a 14-day free trial!
