Age is more than just a number for Gold Digger’s loved-up couple on Showmax.

Julia Ormond and Ben Barnes are star-crossed lovers in this six-episode British miniseries. The trouble is that Julia is old enough to be his mom. They’ve got no issues with their romance, but Julia’s kids aren’t exactly happy.

Julia’s hubby and bestie cheated and she was left as a really rich divorcee. And Ben claims to be all alone in life, yet his potential step-kids smell a rat – and they make sure that Mom knows.

The support cast do their jobs well, but the real intensity is with the leads. You totally buy into both their love/trust for each other, but there’s always that sense of something not quite right.

It’s not just a tense drama though, says Lucy Mangan from theguardian.com. “It’s bold and hugely entertaining by writer Marnie Dickens. How you would react if your 60-year-old mother/ex-wife/friend became involved with a man nearly 30 years her junior. And it poses the wider question of how society views female sexuality versus men’s as they move through life, and how brutal it can be.”
