Mathew Ngugi on Adam to Eve and his rising acting career

With just a few years into his acting career, Mathew Ngugi is quickly establishing himself as one of Kenya’s most promising young actors. Effortlessly blending charm, emotional depth, and natural screen presence, the Kenyatta University–trained performer has steadily built a résumé that speaks volumes.

From memorable performances in Mo-Faya and Big Girl Small World to his scene-stealing turn in MTV Shuga Mashariki, Mathew’s rise has been nothing short of impressive. Online, fans have responded with memes, commentary, and praise, cementing his place as a talent to watch. Yet behind the growing fame is a self-described introvert who still battles stage jitters and prefers gaming to movie marathons.

Currently, Mathew stars in Showmax’s Adam to Eve, where he brings humor and emotional nuance to the role of Jackson—the office loudmouth with zero filter and an unexpectedly big heart. Offscreen, he remains grounded, drawing inspiration from faith, childhood memories, and the belief that acting is a lifelong craft.

In this exclusive interview, Mathew Ngugi reflects on his journey, his growth, and what lies ahead.

What inspired you to pursue a career in acting?

I have wanted to be an actor since I was about 10 years old. I was actively involved in extracurricular activities like music and drama throughout school. I never really had a fixed career path growing up, but acting stood out because it gave me the freedom to be anyone and everyone.

2024 was a breakthrough year for you. How has the journey been?

It’s been such a huge blessing to witness this level of growth in just a few years of my career. Transitioning from a quiet lifestyle to one that puts you in the public eye was challenging—especially because I’m introverted. Learning to engage with fans and the media took time.

One thing this journey has taught me is that the moment you think you’ve arrived, there’s always more road ahead. There’s so much left to learn, and I’m excited to see where the journey leads as I rely on God’s wisdom to guide me.

How does fan feedback shape your performances?

The audience is the reason I’m in this career. Feedback—both positive and negative—is essential. It helps you understand how people perceive your work and highlights areas that need improvement. Without it, you miss out on opportunities to grow.

You’ve worked with esteemed filmmakers in Kenya such as Reuben Odanga and Nick Mutuma. How has that shaped your craft?

Every director has a unique approach. As an actor, learning to collaborate and communicate effectively is crucial. I especially appreciated how Lizz Njagah and Alex Konstantaras gave me the freedom to make Jackson my own character in Adam to Eve. That trust means everything.

If Adam to Eve had a Showmax crossover, which show would you choose?

Single Kiasi. Definitely.

Which actor would you want work with one day?

Timothée Chalamet.

Jackson is more than comic relief. How did you ground the character?

I built Jackson as someone who genuinely can’t read the room. His outspoken and unpredictable nature makes him comical, but also human. I drew inspiration from a primary school classmate I once observed—it fascinated me, and those traits naturally found their way into Jackson.

Which line do you think fans will quote the most?

There’s a party scene where Jackson introduces his cousin as the DJ. When Eve asks who he is, Jackson says, “He’s DJ Bang…gi… DJ Bangi.” I don’t know why, but that scene stayed with me.

How does working in an ensemble cast Sharpen your skills?

You feed off different energies, just like in real life. No one exists in isolation. Working closely with other actors teaches you adaptability and exposes you to different approaches and perspectives
