Hugh Grant is back as Daniel Cleaver, with Leo Woodall (Jack in The White Lotus S2) as Bridget’s much younger love interest and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor as her son’s teacher. The romcom has an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Independent (UK) calling it “vulnerable, honest and very funny” in their four-star review. 

Gladiator II | First on Showmax | Stream from Friday, 2 May  

Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honour to return the glory of Rome to its people. 

As Lucius, Paul Mescal (Normal People) was nominated for Best Lead Actor at this year’s Irish Film and Television Awards, while Oscar winner Denzel Washington was up for Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes as Macrinus. Also look out for Emmy nominees Pedro Pascal and Connie Nielsen.

Twisters | Stream from Monday, 26 May 

From the producers of the Jurassic, Bourne and Indiana Jones franchises comes Twisters, a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster Twister.  

Directed by Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Glen Powell (Anyone But You) as opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
 
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes says: “Summoning a storm of spectacle and carried along by the gale force winds of Glen Powell’s charisma, Twisters’ forecast is splendid with a high chance of thrills.” 

Die Tragiese Saak van Pamina Vermaak | Stream from Sunday, 11 May

Based on Annie Klopper’s novel of the same name, Die Tragiese Saak van Pamina Vermaak centres on a young journalist who, following an outburst at work, finds herself jobless, potentially homeless, near-penniless and completely plan-less.  

Fleeing to her mothers’ house in the West Coast town where she grew up, Pamina crosses paths with one-hit-wonder rocker Wolf de Jager (Christiaan Schoombie from Troukoors), who’s battling a creative slump after his engagement fell apart.  

The feature film directorial debut of TV presenter Kabous Meiring, Die Tragiese Saak van Pamina Vermaak premiered at Silwerskerm in 2023, where it won Best Actress, Best Script, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.  

Calling Pamina Vermaak a “romcom with a leather jacket”.

The Bikeriders | Stream from Thursday, 1 May 

After a chance encounter, headstrong Kathy is drawn to Benny, a member of Midwestern motorcycle club the Vandals. But as the club transforms into a dangerous underworld of violence, Benny must choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club.

Never Let Go | Stream from Monday, 5 May 

Oscar winner Halle Berry stars in the psychological thriller Never Let Go, from award-winning director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes).  

As an evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Needing to stay physically connected at all times, they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.  

Variety says its themes of “grief, sanity, rebellion and redemption are intrinsically intertwined to harrowing, claustrophobic effect, heightening the hallucinatory horrors and dread-soaked atmospheric pull.”

This satirical comedy centres on Aren, a young man who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people’s lives easier.  

Justice Smith (The Get Down) stars as Aren, with David Alan Grier (The Colour Purple) and Drew Tarver (The Other Two) co-starring.

Variety calls it “a deftly observant fantasy comedy that stays true to its own irreverence.”

Turtles All the Way Down | Stream from Thursday, 22 May 

With hits like The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, John Green is a master at transforming raw teenage emotions into cinematic gold.  

Based on his bestselling novel of the same name, Turtles All the Way Down stars Isabela Merced (The Last of Us S2) as Aza Holmes, a teenager navigating complex emotions, who reconnects with her childhood crush (Felix Mallard from Ginny & Georgia). 

Turtles All the Way Down has an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Roger Ebert calls it a “charming, delightful YA romance” that will “find the youth identifying and everyone else remembering.”

Wicked Little Letters | Stream from Thursday, 15 May 

Based on a true story, Wicked Little Letters co-stars Oscar winner Olivia Colman and Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley as two neighbours in a 1920s English seaside town: conservative Edith and rowdy Irish migrant Rose.  

When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime after a national uproar. 

Wicked Little Letters has an 80% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Roger Ebert praising its “light-hearted eccentricity” that is “flexible enough to allow for real sentiment”. 

Widow Clicquot | Stream from Thursday, 8 May 

Widow Clicquot is based on the true story of the “Grande Dame of Champagne”, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (1777–1866) who, at the age of 20, becomes Madame Clicquot after an arranged marriage into a winemaking family. 

Haley Bennett stars opposite Tom Sturridge (The Sandman), Sam Riley (Control), and Natasha O’Keeffe (The Wheel of Time).  

Based on the 2008 book The Widow Clicquot by bestselling biographer (and winemaker) Tilar J Mazzeo, the biopic premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has an 80% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Deadline hailing it as “fast-paced and sexy.”

Gunner | Stream from Monday, 19 May

Liam Hemsworth (Westworld) stars as war veteran Colonel Lee Gunner, who takes his two sons on a camping trip to reconnect with them after being at the battle front. The trip goes awry when they cross paths with a gang of violent bikers in the midst of a massive drug operation.

Morgan Freeman plays drug kingpin Kendric Ryker, with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son Joseph Baena as Deputy Wally Harper. Gunner has won nine awards on the independent movie festival circuit, including seven for action director and producer Dimitri Logothetis.

After being released from prison after 25 years, New York mafia capo Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Realising that his mob family may not have his best interests in mind, Dwight set out to establish a new criminal empire – in a place that might as well be another planet. 

In his first TV lead role, Sylvester Stallone stars as Manfredi – a role that’s already earned him a Critics Choice Super Awards nomination for Best Actor in an Action Series. 

With a rare 100% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Season 2’s first episode became the most-watched global premiere ever on Paramount+.

Happy Face | First on Showmax | Binge from Saturday, 10 May 

Happy Face is based on the true-life story of Melissa Jesperson-Moore, who at age 15 discovered that her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, was the serial murderer known as the Happy Face Killer.

The Paramount+ series centres on the now grown-up Melissa (Annaleigh Ashford from Welcome to Chippendales). Her serial killer father (Dennis Quaid) forces his way back into her life after decades of no contact; the talk show she works for decides to run her story; and a possibly innocent man is set to be put to death for a crime her father may have committed.

Mashable calls Happy Face “ruthlessly gripping,” saying, “True crime fans, your next TV obsession has arrived.”  

Grosse Point Garden Society S1 | Mondays from 21 May 

Grosse Point Garden Society follows four members of a suburban garden club who get entangled in a scandalous murder and are forced to bury the body – in their own well-manicured flower beds. In this juicy drama from the creators of Good Girls, everyone’s got dirt … but some secrets never stay buried. 

The cast is led by Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Amy Santiago), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Critics Choice nominee AnnaSophia Robb (The Way Way Back), and Ben Rappaport (The Good Wife).  

Daily Beast calls Grosse Point Garden Society “a spiritual sequel to Desperate Housewives cross-pollinated with Big Little Lies.”

S.W.A.T Season 8 on Showmax

Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson and his elite tactical team Twenty Squad are back for the action-packed eighth season of S.W.A.T.  

Season 8 of the Emmy-nominated action drama is set to be the final season (though the show has been cancelled twice before, and pulled through both times).
