The Real Housewives of Durban Season 2: Jojo’s mansion

From distinctive art pieces, to a dream garden and custom-made furniture, get a sneak peek into Jojo Robinson’s mansion!

It didn’t take long for new cast member and artist Jojo Robinson to fit into the circle of women in Season 2 of reality show The Real Housewives of Durban (RHOD). Like the original cast, Jojo is stylish, she oozes confidence, and she has expensive taste, which is reflected in her multi-million-rand mansion in Durban.

Jojo’s home is what real estate dreams are made of: the modern home with an open plan features a large living space with custom-made furniture, luxurious kitchen with marble tops and costly art pieces. The outside is just as elegant, with a sparkling infinity pool, spacious backyard and a lush garden.

“My home is modern and minimalistic. I don’t like clutter and I prefer simple walls. More than anything, I’m drawn to clean lines and white walls with art. I wanted my home to resemble an art gallery,” explains Jojo.

The first time that the women were invited to Jojo’s home was in Season 2’s episode 2, when they had a cake-decorating activity in the dining room. Since then, Jojo has hosted a pool party and a Jochella, which is inspired by the famous California music festival Coachella.

Below, Jojo discusses her home and how she transformed it into a masterpiece.

When buying your home, what was the design style that you were looking for?

My husband Calven and I were searching for something modern and open, and that’s exactly what we obtained. We are the second owners of the house, and the first designed and built her – yes, sometimes I refer to our home as her. She was designed by a local architect, with mostly glass doors and giant windows to make the home feel like the inside is part of the outside. A section of the home slides open to welcome the garden in.

How long did it take to get your house to look as beautiful as it does?

We have been living in the home for three years and we’re still in the process of re-modelling some rooms and some aspects in the house. There’s always an ongoing project and that’s because we want to transform our home into exactly what we want. Our next project is to build an indoor spa, with a heated plunge pool and a gym that will hopefully start this year or the next.

Which elements define the inside of your home and what inspired the décor?

The art pieces. I like clean minimalistic lines and pops of colour that are carried through the home but mostly, I want the home to feel clean and open. I believe that my inspiration comes from my obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), I’m an absolute perfectionist and again, too much clutter makes me feel chaotic – my home should feel peaceful and serene.

What did you find most challenging about designing your home?

Re-designing the inside of the home was challenging because it requires changing someone else’s vision. At the same time, it’s satisfying to transform the home into our dream.

How did Calven influence the style of your house?

He doesn’t [Laugh]. Calven is laidback and he takes the backseat when it comes to decorating the house. Since I’m the one who spends most of the time in the home, it makes sense that I decorate her.

Describe the artwork that is included in your home.

I have three sculptures from local sculptor Marco Olivier, which cost around R100 000 per piece. There are also two life-size human figures in the home and a larger-than-life face sculpture on the wall.

We have giant pieces from another local-based artist Hilde Alet Malan, who custom made several art pieces for our home. Additionally, we have a huge granite fountain that was designed for the garden. The fountain flows with our Marco Olivier piece that is placed at the pool. In essence, the art in my home is calming.

Which is your favourite room or space in your home?

I adore the TV room. It’s made with giant floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the double staircase. The room is next to the pool and our zen hedges that are in the garden.
