What to look out for on the DStv Premiership final day
From the fight for CAF competition spots to the relegation battle, the stakes are high for the final day of the DStv Premiership season, streaming live on Showmax Pro on Saturday, 20 May, courtesy of SuperSport.
Here’s where to look for all the last-day drama.
The tussle for second
With the league title being wrapped up by Mamelodi Sundowns well in advance, there’s been plenty of focus on the battle for second that couldn’t be closer.
Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United go into the final day in second and third respectively, level on points with the Buccaneers having a slightly better goal difference.
Both are guaranteed a place in continental competition next season. Now it’s a question of who will make it into the CAF Champions League and who will have to settle for the Confederation Cup.
Orlando Pirates will play AmaZulu in their final game, the team they beat in this season’s MTN 8 final for their first bit of silverware under Jose Riveiro.
SuperSport United are looking to finish in the top two for the first time in 13 years during Gavin Hunt’s previous spell in charge. They will take on Sekhukhune away from home.
MTN 8 spots still up for grabs
Five spots have been secured for next year’s MTN 8 and no fewer than six teams are in contention for the remaining spots.
Stellenbosch face TS Galaxy in the one game that consists of two of the teams playing each other. TS Galaxy need to win to give themselves a chance of qualifying whereas a point will probably end up being enough for Stellenbosch.
Sekhukhune United, who have just reached their first ever final in the Nedbank Cup, will probably need at least a draw against SuperSport United for a spot in the other PSL knockout tournament.
Golden Arrows and Swallows are other teams in contention and both of them will play teams in the relegation battle (Chippa United and Marumo Gallants respectively).
Royal AM are currently 11th and are technically still in the running before they take on Richards Bay, but they need to win and have a few other results to go their way if they are to make it.
Who will avoid the drop?
Maritzburg United finished their season in midweek with a draw against Mamelodi Sundowns and now sit anxiously a point above the bottom two as they await their fate.
Marumo Gallants are 15th going into the weekend after spending the majority of the season at the bottom. They play Swallows who have been in great form to get out of the relegation battle themselves.
Chippa United prop up the table due to having a worse goal difference than Marumo Gallants. The Eastern Cape outfit are preparing to face Golden Arrows on the back of a worrying 4-0 defeat to TS Galaxy in their last game.
Can Mayo grab the Golden Boot?
While there are team narratives wherever you look on the final day, the winner of the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot is also still to be decided.
Peter Shalulile has played his last league game and sits on 12 goals that he hopes will be enough to win the award for the third time and he sits level with Khanyisa Mayo.
Mayo is fresh off a brace against Richards Bay will come up against the Kaizer Chiefs defence with a shot at winning the golden boot outright.
Either way, he will be the first Cape Town City player to ever win the award and at the age of 24, he could still improve and register higher goal tallies in the future.
