All episodes of Showmax Kenya’s Subterranea are ready to binge
Kenya’s first sci-fi series, Subterranea, is coming to a close, with all eight episodes available to binge from tomorrow. A Kibanda Pictures production, the show has captured sci-fi thriller fans since its debut, taking them on an unforgettable journey of survival, psychological tension, and human resilience.
The eight-part series followed eight participants of a psychological experiment who are placed in an underground bunker to test the effects of close-quarter secluded relationships on humans. In a twist of irony, the world ends and the eight get trapped in the bunker with nowhere to go.

The series has been praised by critics for its intense storyline and stellar performances.
Subterranea stars Foi Wambui (Crime and Justice), Peter Kawa (County 49), Nice Githinji (The Caller), Melvin Alusa (Mission to Rescue), Makena Kahuha (Kina), Biko Nyongesa (Sense8), Pauline Komu (Groove Theory), and newcomer Chintu Chudasama as the characters Pink, Black, Grey, Red, Orange, Brown, Yellow, and Green, respectively. The masterminds behind the experiment are portrayed by Philippa Ndisi-Herrmann, Melissa Kiplagat (Country Queen), and Dadson Gakenga (Subira).
The final episode, titled Memento Mori, was directed by the multi-award-winning filmmaker Likarion Wainaina (Supa Modo). It promises a dramatic conclusion as the remaining members of the bunker attempt a desperate escape, with many perishing along the way. Those who survive reach the surface, only to be met with a shocking revelation.
“Creating Subterranea was a remarkable journey and an immense leap into uncharted territory for Kenyan storytelling,” says Wainaina, who doubled up as the show’s co-producer. “I have always gravitated toward unconventional, experimental ideas, and with Subterranea, we dared to imagine Kenya’s first sci-fi series in a completely new way.”
He adds, “My hope was that this project will spark a movement, encouraging local filmmakers to explore bold, imaginative genres. I am thankful that Showmax took a chance on this project, and I believe it will open doors for more diverse storytelling that resonates with our audiences. Kenyan stories are limitless, and Subterranea is proof of that.”
“The journey to bring Subterranea to life was both thrilling and challenging, a true testament to the power of reimagining what’s possible in Kenyan storytelling,” says Brian Munene, creator and head writer. “This series was not just a personal dream come true but a pioneering step for sci-fi in Kenya, proving that Kenyan talent and stories are boundless.”
