Liverpool’s greatest wins against arch-rivals Man Utd

The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United is one of the most iconic and fiercely contested in world football. While the two clubs have enjoyed periods of dominance throughout their histories, Liverpool has undoubtedly had the upper hand in recent years, delivering a series of emphatic victories that have sent shockwaves through the footballing world.

From the historic 7-0 thrashing to the clinical 3-0 win at Old Trafford just this past weekend, Liverpool’s triumphs over their arch-rivals have been nothing short of extraordinary.

One of the most memorable moments in this rivalry came when Liverpool humiliated Manchester United with a 7-0 demolition at Anfield. The Reds ran riot, with goals from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and Roberto Firmino. This was a performance that will live long in the memory of Liverpool fans, as they witnessed their team utterly dismantle one of their biggest rivals.

Salah has also played a starring role in Liverpool’s victories over United. The Egyptian forward scored a sensational hat-trick as Liverpool cruised to a 5-0 win at Old Trafford. Salah’s pace, skill, and finishing were on full display, as he tormented United’s defence and left them helpless to stop him. He has now scored 10 goals at Old Trafford so far.

This week, Showmax takes a look back at some of Liverpool’s greatest wins against Manchester United.
From the 7-0 thrashing to the Salah hat-trick and the recent 3-0 victory at Old Trafford, Showmax will be diving into the moments that have defined this legendary rivalry.

Liverpool brought Manchester United crashing down to earth in a stunning 7-0 rout in the Premier League at Anfield in March 2023. Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all struck twice and Roberto Firmino scored the other, with six of the goals coming in an explosive second-half performance. A week after winning the League Cup, United experienced its heaviest defeat in the Premier League and the club’s joint worst loss in all competitions.

It also delivered a major blow to Erik ten Hag’s four-pronged pursuit of trophies, with a league title challenge looking unlikely.

Salah became the Merseyside club’s all-time leading Premier League scorer, with 129 goals. Gakpo opened the scoring in the 43rd minute after Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford had missed chances to put United ahead.

Nunez struck in the 47th and Salah Gakpo made it 3-0 in the 50th. With United looking to get back into the match, Liverpool went on the rampage.

Salah made it 4-0 in the 66th and Nunez struck again in the 75th.

It was 6-0 when Salah scored in the 83rd and Firmino stepped off the bench to score in the 88th.

Mohamed Salah scored a hat trick as Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford. United were four goals down by halftime – the largest margin ever in their history at that stage of a game – and looked disjointed as Salah, Diogo Jota and Naby Keita all found the net.

Salah added his third moments into the second half before Paul Pogba was sent off for a dangerous tackle.

Salah scored his first goal on 38 minutes with a low sidefoot past De Gea, and his second five minutes into added time at the end of the first half with a superb strike from the corner of the box.

The Egypt international completed his hat trick five minutes into the second half. His three goals on Sunday make him the top-scoring African player in Premier League history, overtaking former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba by two goals.

LFC humiliate rivals Man Utd to go top

  • April 2022
  • LFC 4-0 Man Utd

Liverpool outclassed a desperate Manchester United in an embarrassingly one-sided affair at Anfield to go top of the Premier League.

United were without Cristiano Ronaldo following the death of his newborn son and both sets of supporters paid a moving tribute with applause in the seventh minute.

Liverpool were already in front by then, Luis Diaz sweeping home Salah’s pass before the Egyptian ended his eight-game goalless sequence from Sadio Mane’s brilliant pass after 22 minutes.

Mane ended any slim hopes United had of making this a challenging evening for Liverpool with a first-time finish from Diaz’s pass in the 69th minute before Salah completed the rout with five minutes left.

After their 5-0 win at Old Trafford in October, Liverpool are the first club to score at least eight Premier League goals against United in a single season.

The victory moved Jürgen Klopp’s side two points clear of defending champions City.

Arne Slot maintained his perfect start as Liverpool head coach as the Reds ran riot in a resounding 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Luis Diaz’s header handed the visitors the advantage 10 minutes before half-time, after Trent Alexander-Arnold had seen a potential early opener chalked off following a VAR review.

Diaz then doubled his tally seven minutes later with a low finish into the bottom corner after being picked out by an intricate pass from Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian scored against United in the Premier League for the 12th time after the break, Liverpool punishing yet another mistake from the Red Devils’ midfield to add some gloss to the scoreline.
The triumph sees Liverpool join Manchester City as the only two sides with 100 per cent records after three matches, while United enter the international break in 14th with three points.

This victory capped a phenomenal week for Liverpool Football Club, in which the first team also smashed Real Madrid 4-0 at home.

High off their European victory, the Reds went with confidence to Old Trafford to face their fellow title-chasers.

However, the game didn’t begin as planned as Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with a penalty in the 23rd minute.

Liverpool responded quickly, though, as Fernando Torres nicked the ball off a falling Vidic and slotted beyond Edwin van der Sar to equalise.

From that point on, it was all Liverpool as Gerrard buried a penalty before the break; Fabio Aurelio netted a great free kick and Andrea Dossena scored late on for a second game in a row.

Oh, and you guessed it, Vidic was sent off.

Another season, another second-placed finish, and another thrashing of Man United. This one came at home and was almost over before it started when Luis Diaz tapped in a Sadio Mane cross just five minutes in.

Seventeen minutes later, Salah made it two with a clinical finish thanks to another Mane assist, this time a phenomenal chip over the backline into the Egyptian’s path.

Liverpool continued their dominance in the second half and after missing several easier chances.
Mane converted first-time into the bottom corner with his weaker foot, which left Mo Salah to add a fourth just a few minutes later, inflicting a second painful defeat on Man United that season.

In a season of memorable moments, this one was right at the top of the list for Liverpool supporters as the Reds went away to Old Trafford and wiped the floor with the hosts.

The pressure was on Liverpool, who had a much better team, arguably for the first time since 1990, with David Moyes’ takeover from Alex Ferguson not going to plan.

This game confirmed the power shift from the red half of Manchester to Liverpool, and was the fifth consecutive win in a run of 11 that saw the Reds ultimately fall just short of the Premier League title.

Penalties either side of halftime from Steven Gerrard allowed Liverpool to relax into their rhythm after the break, and Luis Suarez added an inevitable third near the end.

In addition, for the third time in his career against Liverpool, Nemanja Vidic was sent off for a second yellow card, which only sweetened the afternoon.

The only disappointment of the day was that Gerrard didn’t take his chance to score a hat-trick of penalties, hitting the post with this third spot-kick.

Jan Molby’s three from the spot against Coventry, in 1986, remains the last time a Liverpool player managed the feat.
