The Deuce S1-3
This series may be about the porn industry but it’s far from smutty. Rather, it’s an intelligent, pacy look at a moment in time when porn was something a little closer to art.
Starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, the series is set in the 70s and 80s. In the third and final season, we’re in 1985. VHS has become the primary medium for pornography and the Aids epidemic has changed the industry for the better. The Emmy-winning show stars Franco as twins Vince and Frankie, and Maggie Gyllenhaal as former sex worker Eileen, also known as Candy, who becomes a successful adult film director.
Critics praised Season 3:
- Vulture: “It’s a great show about work, about the place of the individual within history, and most of all, about the faceless indomitability of money over human affairs.”
- IndieWire: “World-building is a topic that tends to come up with science-fiction sagas or fantasy epics, but The Deuce is one of the most impressive examples in recent memory.”
- Den of Geek: “In the end, HBO and the rest of the world at large has once again benefited from handing David Simon and friends a blank check. The Deuce has always had a way of capturing the way life is and the way it should be simultaneously.”
