The 5 funniest episodes of Molly & Wors

Showmax launched Seasons 2 and 3 of classic South African comedy Molly & Wors this month in South Africa. There’s never a dull moment in the home of Worsie Visagie and his long-suffering wife Molly (Willie Esterhuizen and Lizz Meiring). Besides their angsty Matric daughter Blapsie (Carien Botha) and son Vaatjie (Gerhard Odendaal), who’s studying to become a chef, there’s also Blapsie’s show-off boyfriend Theunis (Andrew Thompson), who is Vaatjie’s best bud, and Worsie’s nosey mom Ella (played by the late Marga van Rooy).

To get us in the mood for the latest seasons, let’s relive five of the funniest episodes in Season 1!

  1. Monster-in-law (Season 1, episode 4)

Ella arrives unannounced for a visit and Molly’s in no mood for Liewe Heksie (her nickname for Ella, after the famous ’80s puppet TV character). And neither is Wors, as it turns out. Ella walks in and throws her weight around like queen of the castle, demanding her son bring a bucket, antiseptic soap, gloves and a mop so that she can clean the spare room “properly”. Wors is so annoyed that he climbs on the roof (and out of earshot) to fix that roof tile that Molly’s been nagging him about – just to keep clear of Ella!

  2. Blapsie’s drug blip (Season 1, episode 8)

Blapsie’s school sends home a permission slip that will let them test students for drugs, and Theunis later bursts in with news that his beloved girlfriend’s test showed traces of cocaine, dagga and ecstasy. Wors drags his daughter to the doctor and demands Blapsie be tested “for every substance under the sun”. Just as worried, Theunis and Vaatjie find a website with a 12-step programme to save a loved one who’s using drugs. Thankfully they don’t get to put Blapsie through any of the steps – her official test comes back clean and poor Theunis thinks that everyone’s gone mad and that they’re in denial about Blapsie’s drug abuse.

  3. That’ll leave a mark (Season 1, episode 14)

What Wors says and what he does aren’t always the same thing. Especially when he’s had a drink or two. And Molly can smell trouble from a mile away when Wors tells her that he’s going to Montecasino for a work conference. Molly warns him to be home by 9pm sharp and not smelling like a brewery. Expecting the worst, Molly secretly steals her hubby’s bankcards before he leaves, but that doesn’t stop a MacGyver-esque man like Wors from finding trouble. When Molly phones her missing hubby at 10pm, an hour after he was meant to be home in bed, Worsie slurs over the phone that he can’t talk now because he’s getting a tattoo on his left butt cheek. That poor wife of his!

  4. Scooters & salons (Season 1, episode 20)

Blapsie is saving up for a car but when her parents don’t want to help – because there are more important things to spend money on, like a dishwasher – Blapsie changes her mind and eyes a scooter like her brother’s. At the same time, troublemakers Vaatjie and Theunis try to make quick cash with their new bright idea: a massage parlour … totally above board, though. Molly immediately says no, but Wors is willing to lend a hand and tells the youngsters that his dad didn’t call him “Einstein” and “space cadet” for nothing and that he can help with their business plans, oblivious to the fact that Grandpa Visagie was being sarcastic with his comments. And while the boys’ intentions are mostly good, they end up with no clients, empty pockets and emptier hands.

  5. Birthday fibs (Season 1, episode 23)

Ever the loving children, Blapsie and Vaatjie surprise Molly with birthday gifts before breakfast. And her dear hubby? Worsie’s forgotten but tells Molly that he’s commissioned a “super special” surprise gift that will be ready later. Meanwhile, Vaatjie gives his Pops a mouthful after working out that Wors lied, but Wors defends himself. After all, “It’s a husband’s prerogative to tell a little white lie to protect his wife’s feelings,” reasons Wors. That’s not even the best part – Wors hits the roof later when his cheap China Mall earrings are outshone by Molly’s gift from her boss – an expensive pearl necklace. Now if only he knew that Molly wasn’t being all that honest about her new gift either…
