Aquaman (2018)
There are tons of hero comics being turned into movies. But Aquaman is one of the best.
Aquaman is played by Jason Momoa, aka Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones. He’s an obvious choice. He’s from Hawaii. He’s badass. And he’s a natural in the water. But this real-life god among men is not a water god when we meet him. Plain old Arthur Curry is a reluctant future king, and, like many superheroes before him, takes a bit of convincing before he’s willing to take up the fight to prevent a terrible war.
The scenery looks amazing – especially the underwater war with the giant seahorses and sharks being ridden into battle. The time animating the actors’ hair alone to look like they’re really underwater is more than the CGI invested in most movies. And that’s just the beginning.
You’ll recognise plenty of the cast members. Even the villain, Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson), looks like a god. Also spot Willem Dafoe as Arthur’s trainer Vulko, Amber Heard as his love interest Mera, Nicole Kidman as his mom Atlanna and so many others you’ll recognise.
“Aquaman is the first of these attempted epics that actually feels like an epic. It centers on a quest that hops continents and new (undersea) worlds; it introduces a mythology; it culminates in a satisfying battle. It even has bona fide sea monsters,” writes Michael Ordona of Common Sense Media.
