1989: The Year That Made Us
Thirty years ago, the world was a different place. Then 1989 happened and everything changed. In one year, the Berlin Wall fell and the Cold War ended; pro-democracy rallies in Tiananmen Square happened; and in South Africa, the first concrete steps are taken towards dismantling apartheid.
The year saw a cultural and digital revolution, too. The World Wide Web was invented, and even though we didn’t know it yet, would forever alter everything about our lives. Bart Simpson was born and Batman and The Little Mermaid became famous.
Tabloid journalism was on the rise, and news journalists broadcast iconic footage and images around the planet. Relive all these incredible moments in this six-part National Geographic series.
