7 Game of Thrones characters you will never forget
Some shows are hard to love. Game of Thrones isn’t one of them, even with the tears and emotional turmoil it has put us through. When trying to convince my friends to start watching it, I’m always amazed when some say it’s too medieval and others say it’s too wintry. I’ll admit it can get brutal, bloody and gory, which not everyone can handle. But when people say they won’t watch the show because of the dragons – these ones make my heart weep.
Why does this show matter so much? I’ll sum this up in two words: Valar Morghulis. In the Game of Thrones’ universe, all men must die. No character is indispensable: even the high and the mighty have to fall to advance the plot line. That is why the game of thrones matters: there are no obvious winners at the end, although we can point out a few with potential. Then again, Westeros has never been kind to anyone with ambition.
With all seven seasons now available on Showmax, let’s take a look at the seven most important characters, each one of them a very real reason that you should watch Game of Thrones.
1. You will meet Ned Stark, the most noble man in Westeros. He will tell you that winter is coming and you will believe him. You will fall in love with his ideologies, you will believe that there isn’t a purer man in Westeros. And then he will break your heart – even though it’s not his fault. The last you will see of Ned Stark is his head on a spike. You will weep for House Stark. Watch now »
2. You will meet Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, First of her Name, Breaker of Chains, Mother of Dragons blah blah blah. She will remind you of those strict teachers in school who cared about titles, the ones you had to call “doctor” or “professor”, never mister or miss. She will “give birth” to three dragons and walk through fire unburnt. You will give yourself Instagram and Twitter names like The Mother of Dragons. Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen will fascinate you. Watch now »
3. You will meet Cersei Lannister, the default face of evil in Westeros, a schemer extraordinaire who will school you on the real meaning of Game of Thrones – if you play the Game of Thrones, you either win or you die. You will hate and admire Cersei for her scheming abilities – many will fall by her hand. Watch now »
4. You will also meet her twin brother with benefits Ser Jaime Lannister who will push a young boy from a tower and do other horrible things in the name of love. Along the way, he will meet the fiercest female warrior in all of Westeros – Brienne of Tarth – and you will toy with the idea of these two falling in love. Jaime Lannister will lose his hand and from there Game of Thrones will try to humanise this “initial psychopath” and it will succeed. You will learn to love Jaime Lannister. Watch now »
5. You will meet the least loved Lannister child, Tyrion Lannister, a man of great wit and words who loves to drink and knows things. Amidst all your Lannister loathing, you will root for Tyrion. He will go against his father, against his family and you will cheer him down this path of “betrayal”. Tyrion Lannister will meet Daenerys Targaryen and bring her home to claim her rightful place on the Iron Throne. Tyrion Lannister will amuse and impress you. Watch now »
6. At Castle Black, you will meet the bastard of Winterfell Jon Snow – the fairest of them all, with hair as curly as the ocean’s waves and with a face prettier than all the women in Westeros combined. Like his “father” Ned Stark, Jon Snow’s humanity will warm your heart, mostly because being good has never been a rewarding trait in Westeros. But Jon Snow will surpass all your expectations to become the King in the North. He will even toy with death and win. Watch now »
7. You will meet a tiny girl by the name of Arya Stark – your worst nightmare in Westeros. Other than her eyebrows being always on fleek, Arya Stark will stun you with her sword-wielding skills. She will transform into a “girl with no name”, also known as the best assassin in all the seven kingdoms. Arya will make a list of all the Starks’ enemies and she will come back to avenge her family because the North remembers. Watch now »
These are just a few of the many characters you will meet in Game of Thrones, each one unique and utterly unforgettable.
