#GomoraMzansi: Mazet is getting to the money by any means necessary
Episode 50 serves up the unexpected – Mazet turning on her mentor and crime boss, Mam’Sonto. “No, Ma, I’m not leaving you. I’d never do that,” are the words coming from Mazet’s mouth, but Mam’Sonto doesn’t hear it that way.
The pair’s actions in episode 1 set off the show, when Mazet hijacked Mam’Sonto’s daughter Thathi and son-in-law Mbongeni and killed the businessman. Now Mazet wants to do a couple of jobs with a “friend of a friend” because Mam’Sonto has put the brakes on her hijacking business until the cops stop digging into her affairs.
Mazet considers flying out the criminal nest
Telling Mam’Sonto that you want to work with some other guys is a very bad idea to begin with. It’s a slap in the face for everything she’s done for Mazet, taking care of her, raising her as her own, guiding her into the criminal world.
But since Mazet knows every little detail of Mam’Sonto’s intricately woven crime syndicate, letting her go and do other “freelance” work opens Mam’Sonto to attack from enemies should Mazet betray her. Would Mazet be stupid enough to betray her dangerous boss? There’s only one way to find out – continue bingeing!
Melusi is depressed
Headmaster Melusi has been fighting for dear life since he clouted a student and the video went viral. In episode 51, he’s depressed, sitting on the edge of his bed and deeply concerned.
He tells his wife Gladys, “How can I sleep, my love… when I’m about to lose my job and my reputation is on the line?” He’s about to be hauled in front of a committee for his behaviour, notwithstanding the fact that the student hit him first. It’s a sad day for the headmaster, but for viewers this is an exciting development.
From episode 1, Melusi has been a pillar of the community. Sure, he’s got his past and that has a lot to do with Thathi, but for the most part Melusi has put on a brave, honest, hard-working and determined face, helping educate tomorrow’s leaders and giving young lives meaning.
So, to see him beating himself up about this (yes, it’s a serious matter and no teacher should ever strike a student) is a tricky balance – it’s sad to see an educator be torn down by those he’s trying to help, but at the same time we know he’s going to grow and come back stronger, especially when he has Gladys in his corner, telling him that whatever happens, it will be okay.
Queens clash
The claws are out in episode 53 when Thathi barges in on her mother, Mam’Sonto, and Mazet counting piles of cash in the office. While Mam’Sonto is beaming with pride that her protégé has stepped up, telling Mazet, “You were able to handle it (the hijacking) by yourself, that’s a gift and it shows leadership,” Thathi sees it another way.
“Why are you so selfish? I could have died!” hinting that her life as a hijacker (note the irony) was on the line thanks to her hijacking partner Mazet’s reckless behaviour. “My children have already lost one parent. Why would you put my life at risk, Mazet?”
What Thathi really should take note of is the calmness on Mazet’s face and her demeanour. She’s not excited or angry, lashing out and shouting back. Instead, Mazet sits and watches Thathi, never blinking, almost like a leopard watching a springbok walk a little closer to its death trap.
