How Ghana’s finest, Mawuli Gavor built a successful acting career in Nigeria
Ghanaian-born eye candy, Mawuli Gavor first appeared on the Nigerian scene as a TV show host. By the time he hit Nollywood, his career skyrocketed and he quickly became one of the most sought-after names in the industry.
No one can deny Nollywood is one of the biggest movie industries in Africa, and the world at large. This singular fact has played a huge role in boosting the acting careers of many actors across the continent, including Mawuli.
Now we could easily ascribe Mawuli Gavor’s success to his striking good looks. But he’s also been able to hold his own on-screen alongside some of Nigeria’s biggest names. The actor has starred in a number of Nigerian productions that continue to solidify his position in the industry including Showmax original, Ghana Jollof.
Mawuli Gavor was born in Accra, Ghana, and was raised in both Ghana and the US where he spent his teenage to young adult years. There, he pursued a degree in business management and finance from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster Pennsylvania.
After his studies, he returned to Ghana where he started his career as an accountant in a large firm. The job of computing numbers wasn’t where Mawuli’s real passion lay. However, being born into a finance inclined family, his career path was already predetermined. Mawuli followed family tradition by studying the course and practicing the trade for some time while working as a model on the side. He even took acting classes to polish his acting skills.

When the opportunity to be on-screen finally presented itself, Mawuli was more than prepared for it. He started off as a TV host on local media in 2015, then went on to host M-Net’s popular Studio 53 Extra. From there on, he carved a path into Nollywood. He has since starred in television series like Hush where he played the role of RMD’s son Tes and Battleground. He’s also starred in a number of movies like Chief Daddy, Sugar Rush, Rumour Has It amongst others.
Since he stepped into the movie scene, Mawuli has established himself as a notable actor becoming highly sought after. Thanks to his dashing good looks and deep baritone which have made him popular with the ladies, Mawuli has become one of Nollywood’s leading heartthrobs.

One could argue that Nigeria’s Nollywood helped the actor push his career and set him apart from his peers in his home country’s movie industry. However, the Nigerian and Ghanaian movie industries continue to churn out crossover stars like Yvonne Okoro, Juliet Ibrahim, and Joselyn Dumas, to mention a few. Comedian Basketmouth’s Showmax original series, Ghana Jollof is a testament to this fact.
Basketmouth’s new show brought about the union of two separate movie industries to make the comedic treat that is Ghana Jollof. Who better to show the marriage of these two countries than Ghana’s very own Mawuli Gavor who stars in the series?
The ambitious show was shot in both Accra and Lagos. It follows the story of two friends who go in search of a better life in Ghana. The show promised to deliver a bit of both worlds and it’s been doing just that since its release. It also stars other Ghanaians like Joselyn Dumas, James Gardiner, and Jacinta Ocansey. The show also features Stanley Chibuna aka Funnybone, Akah Nnani, Buchi, and Basketmouth himself.
Mawuli makes his country and both movie industries proud as he brings the Ghanaian flavour to Ghana Jollof. For many of his fans, the show presented the opportunity to see the star doing what he does best in his home country and he did not fall hand.
