Nigerian Idol S7: It’s Theatre Week time!
Last week on Nigerian Idol saw judges Yinka Davies, Obi Asika, and D’banj select the top 50 talents from the 75 golden ticket holders, and this week, the number will be whittled down even further.
The pressure is mounting as the top 50 battle for a chance to perform on the Nigerian Idol stage.
Simi also made a comeback, rejoining Obi Asika and D’banj on the elite panel of judges in time for the round of duets.
Here are some of our favourite highlights and performances from the Duet Round.
Precious and Chisom glide through to solos
These two opened the Duet Round and absolutely gave us a show!
For Precious and Chisom, teamwork certainly made the dream work and our favorite thing about this performance was that it didn’t feel like they were competing and nobody was trying to out-sing the other.
We couldn’t help but dance along to their rendition of Sinner by Adekunle Gold and Lucky Daye, which earned Precious and Chisom a round of applause and a unanimous vote from the judges, guaranteeing them a spot at the solo round.
We guess it’s safe to say that their success was just the motivation that other contestants needed as three more duet pairs made it through to the solo round after their performance.
The end of the road for Kevin and Azuka
One of the most interesting things about the Duet Round of the Nigerian Idol competition is that it’s not just about having a great voice, but also the ability to work well as a team.
While Kevin and Azuka are both very talented singers individually, they couldn’t quite figure out how to work together to make the best of their performance, and even during rehearsals, neither Kevin nor Azuka could agree on how to go about their performance.
Unfortunately, their inability to synchronise and blend perfectly ultimately brought their individual journeys to an end.
Better luck next time, guys.
Debby and Progress defeat all odds, scale through to the solo round
What do you get when you pair two powerful voices, throw in some chemistry and a dash of teamwork? You get the performance of a lifetime, which is what Debby and Progress brought to our screens.
Even though Debby’s village people tried to get her with a cold, which consequently limited the range of her voice, they both worked together to find the perfect harmony.
Performing You Are The Reason by Calum Scott, they supported each other through the performance and it was absolutely amazing to see.
Judge Obi said, “the honest truth is, that was beautiful to listen to and the chemistry between you two was tangible.”
With a unanimous vote and a resounding round of applause, Progress and Debby are through to the next round.
Congratulations, guys!
Chukwuka and Savior are through to the solo round
If at first, you fail, try again … and bring in the team spirit.
This was the case for Chukwuka, who had been in the competition before but didn’t make it past Theatre Week, and thus was feeling the pressure and hoping to prove himself this time.
On the other hand, his partner Savior was hoping to leverage his previous experience to give a fantastic performance.
Performing Labyrinth’s Jealous, these two complemented each other like bread and butter and Simi couldn’t help but admit that theirs was one of her favourite performances of the day.
Chukwuka and Savior are through to the Solo Round all thanks to great teamwork.
Way to go, guys!
Jordan and Itohan deliver a stunning performance, sailing through to the Solo Round
When we saw Jordan and Itohan perform individually at the first round of auditions, we knew that these young’uns were definitely ones to look out for.
Now, imagine our excitement when two of our faves from the round of auditions got paired up!
Once we saw the pair, we were anticipating one of the best performances from this episode and we were not disappointed.
Performing Calum Scott’s You Are The Reason, the duo brought magic to the stage, tears to our eyes and goosebumps to our skin.
It was even better to see two very young people with so much talent and potential deliver a great performance and receive a standing ovation from all three judges!
Congratulations, Jordan and Itohan! We must greet you both specially as you proceed to the Solo Round!
Eyo and Ikemefuna flunk out of the competition
Like we said earlier, your duet partner can either make or marr your chances of progressing to the next round and for Ikemefuna, his chances were marred by his partner, Eyo.
While Eyo had the swag but not the voice, Ikemefuna had the voice but no swag whatsoever.
During rehearsals, the vocal coach encouraged Eyo to do more with his vocals and we were really hoping that he would bring it in the actual performance not just for himself, but for his duet partner.
Performing Sinner by Adekunle Gold, Eyo, unfortunately, did not deliver with his vocals and their performance turned out to be rather underwhelming despite Ikemefuna’s effort.
Consequently, both Ikemefuna and Eyo were denied a spot at the Solo Round and have reached the end of their Nigerian Idol journey.
Abigail and Gerald wrap up the Duet Round with an unforgettable performance
Abigail and Gerald’s performance was the last but certainly not the least, and what a way to end the day!
These two delivered a jaw-dropping performance, which will probably go down in Nigerian Idol audition history. Talk about saving the best for last!
Performing You Are The Reason by Calum Scott, these two complemented each other in perfect harmony and synchronisation and we were blown away!
D’banj, who looked animated during their performance, commented: “I must greet you specially. That sounded like a Disney soundtrack.”
Judge Obi also commended their performance saying, “I thought that was an incredible performance, I thought both of you really brought it and you complimented each other, you didn’t get in each other’s way … but you were both able to shine.”
Suffice to say that Abigail and Gerald are well on their way to the Solo Round.
