Noem My Skollie, now on Showmax for overseas subscribers
Noem My Skollie was definitely chosen as South Africa’s official entry to the Oscars for a reason: this is a world-class movie, telling a story that pulls at your heartstrings through the use of incredible cinematography, excellent acting and outstanding directing. Plus, it’s based on a true story: that of scriptwriter John Fredericks and his fight for survival inside (or rather outside) the world of violent gangs. The film looks at the lives of AB and his friends growing up on the Cape Flats in the 1960s. Dann-Jacques Mouton excels in the role of the older AB who lands up in prison with his friend Gimba and uses his gift for story-telling to protect himself and stay out of gangs. Watch now »
The rest of the cast is also impressive. Gantane Kusch, Christian Bennett, Gershwin Mias, Abduraghmaan Adams, Oscar Petersen, Tarryn Wyngaard, Peter Butler, Irshaad Ally, Charlton George, Lee-Ann van Rooy, Jill Levenberg and Sandi Schultz all portray characters in the film, and there’s an appearance by the Afrikaans rapper Hemelbesem.
Noem My Skollie does not shy away from tough themes and challenging subject matter, but it remains an entertaining and deeply human story until the end. Make sure you have tissues handy when you stream this great film on Showmax!
