Rest easy Siyabonga Zubane, Gomora’s bright young star
The South African Arts industry was hit with yet another heavy blow when news of Siyabonga Zubane’s untimely passing became public.
Siyabonga played the role of Sdumo, a mischievous young thug who caused chaos at every opportunity.
Siyabonga’s role on Gomora was steadily making him a household name and even though he was a supporting cast member, his work left a lasting impression every time he appeared on the screen.
Sdumo’s memorable moments on Gomora
The Sdumo character had many memorable moments, but the ones that stood out the most for us were when he snitched at every opportunity.
Sdumo was not to be trusted and he certainly did not hide that character trait about him. Remember when he snitched not only on MaZet but on Mam’Sonto in front of an entire court hearing?
Sdumo snitching in court was quite a brave move, especially considering how Mam’Sonto doesn’t take lightly to those who sing like a canary about her activities. But for some strange reason, Sdumo never made Mam’Sonto’s hit list.
A favourite on set
Although sworn enemies on camera, Siyabonga and Mam’Sonto played by Connie Chiume had nothing but love and respect for each other.
The same applies to his close friendship with co-cast member MaZet played by Siphesihle Ndaba.
The sudden passing of Siyabonga has undoubtedly left a gaping hole in the hearts of all those who appreciated his work, and especially those he worked with.
Rest easy Siyabonga. Thank you for sharing your gift with South Africa.
