Rewind, reboot, repeat: these movies are even better than the originals
Still stuck inside because of lockdown? Of course you are! But you can wipe away those COVID blues by reliving movies… with a modern reboot, update and revamp! Here’s a peek at some movies from the past that are looking better than ever in the new world of cinema…
Child’s Play (2019)
This is the 2019 re-imagining of the 1988 movie (which you can stream here on Showmax too). It’s creepy and dark and just as blood-soaked as the original. Instead of a dead serial killer’s spirit possessing a doll, the new version of Chucky is an artificial intelligence doll that’s had its security protocols overridden, allowing it to attack and kill anyone it thinks is trying to steal its owner Andy from it. Bloody scary fun!
21 Jump Street (2012) and 22 Jump Street (2014)
Iconic 80s buddy cop show 21 Jump Street (with Johnny Depp) got a 2010s comedy makeover with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as mismatched cop partners Jenko and Schmidt. The two movies follow the buddies as they first go undercover at a high school to find drugs, then they go in search of drug dealers at a college in the second movie. There are loads more laughs in the movie than there were in the original TV series, along with a surprise cameo or two from the original cast.
King Kong (2005)
This is the 2005 remake of the 1933 movie about the giant ape terrorising Manhattan after he’s taken from his home on Skull Island. It’s an incredibly clever script with huge-name stars (Jack Black, Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody) going back in time to 1933 (a tribute to the original film). Through a series of mishaps, they end up on Skull Island, where Kong falls forms a bond with Vaudeville actress Ann Darrow (Naomi). There are planes, guns, T-Rex dinosaurs and Kong climbing the Empire State Building. The best part is that while the ape is CGI on the outside, he was completely motion-captured by Andy Serkis, who’s played everyone from Gollum in Lord of the Rings, to Caesar the ape in Planet of the Apes.
