SA bids farewell to veteran actor Mncedisi Shabangu
The passing of veteran actor, playwright and theatre director Mncedisi Shabangu, announced on 24 July 2022 on social media, represents a painful loss for the South African arts and entertainment industry.
The star of numerous television shows like Rhythm City, The Lab and iNumber Number, Mncedisi was a well-known face to South Africans. The news about his passing hit social media on 24 July 2022 and sent shocking waves to those he worked with.
A theatre great
The South African theatre industry has lost one of its greats as Mncedisi was well known for acting in several theatre plays like Sizwe Banzi is Dead, alongside Atandwa Kani (It’s Complicated and Love By Chance). The play was written by Dr John Kani (How to Steal 2 Million), Athol Fugard and Winston Ntshona.
Dr John Kani shared a few tweets in tribute to the actor as he regarded him as his son and he also shared the actor’s immeasurable impact on him as a director while they toured the USA.
Other stage plays he starred in include Call Us Crazy and Woza Albert. He has also directed several productions like Wangesheya-Wangesheya, Kanyamazane and Vuka Machel at the Market Theatre.
An inspiration to many
Those who have experienced him at work have shared tributes of how amazing he was on screen, on stage and also behind the camera.
DAM actress Tembisa Mdoda-Nxumalo reflected on how he was such a good person, and how he nurtured the arts and everyone in it.
The director of Pearls of Wisdom, Sihle Hlophe, also took to social media to share how this veteran actor’s talent inspired her.
A mentor to aspiring actors
He is remembered not only by his peers but also by many aspiring actors whose passion for a career in the arts was ignited by seeing his work. His passion and generous nature inspired everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
As we try to come to terms with his passing, we can only ponder his craftsmanship and passion for telling South African stories.
