Stuff’s App of the Year: Showmax
A good chunk of my brain is clogged with random facts of dubious value. Need someone to name all 44 United States Presidents in order? I’m your man. Need to identify a song from the 80’s or 90’s and only got the first seven nanoseconds with which to identify it? I may be able to help. Want a quote from The Big Lebowski relevant to any given situation? That’s my superpower.
The downside of this (I’m still not sure if there’s an upside) is that I seem to have run out of space to store new info, particularly when it comes to gadgets and tech. This is where Stuff magazine comes in. I admit that I’m a Stuff junkie – it’s like having your much cooler friend, the trendy one who can cut through the clutter to explain meaningful new tech, on tap when you need them. If I’m looking at buying anything with a plug or a battery, odds are that I’ll look it up on Stuff first. If I’m looking for advice on how to get the most out of my tech and gadgets, which games and apps are the best, Stuff’s my go-to.
This preamble might help explain why I get such a buzz out of seeing Showmax mentioned in Stuff. In fact, this month we didn’t just get a mention. Stuff has extended their annual gadget awards to include the inaugural Stuff App Awards, and I was bowled over to see that Showmax was one of the four finalists. We were in great company – the other three were Zapper (payments app – one that I use loads), Cliff Central (shaking up radio the same way video on demand is shaking up TV), and WumDrop (deliver almost anything in Cape Town and Johannesburg).
The kicker to this is that we came out on top – Showmax was named Stuff’s Overall App of the Year. #winning (if you’re not into the whole brevity thing).
