The Naturalist: Coelacanth (2022)
Ever heard of the living fossil? That’s the coelacanth – a fish as old as time… and it walks on land, too (not a whole lot, but it can). It’s famous not only for not only still being alive, but because the first “living” one was found in 1938 on SA’s east coast.
This doccie is narrated by talkshow host Cato Bekker and it explores not only the fish that was meant to have died out 66 million years ago, but also the woman who discovered it in the nets of local fishermen: the late Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, who passed away in 2004.
It’s a peek into the past, with experts talking about the find and naturalist Marie, exploring this ground-breaking globally significant discovery that happened right here in Mzansi’s own waters. But more than a history and biology lesson about a fish – you’ll learn a lot about your own country without even having to take a shot’ left.
