Want to Storm Area 51? Watch these shows instead
It’s the Facebook event that took the world by storm: an invitation to “Storm Area 51 – They Can’t Stop Us All!” It’s scheduled for 20 September 2019, and thousands of people have vowed to gather to storm the super-secret US Air Force facility.
After pleas from local law enforcement agencies, the original Facebook event has been deleted, although some alien devotees are still determined to take this opportunity to try and get behind those impenetrable walls. Unfortunately for us, Area 51 is in Nevada, USA, so it’s not terribly convenient. However, there are plenty of series to stream that will answer some of your questions – or raise new ones.
Project Blue Book
This series, which is currently showing first and only on Showmax, is based on real-life projects commissioned by the US government in the 1950s and 60s, at the height of UFO-mania. Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) plays astrophysicist Allen J. Hynek, who helmed the project and undertook a series of investigations into unusual sightings and reports of alien phenomena.
TV Fanatic said: “Project Blue Book already has me hooked, and I appreciate the real-life cases on which each episode is based. It gives viewers a thought-provoking authenticity to the story being told.”
Astronauts: Toughest Job in the Universe
This BBC series follows 12 candidates as they battle it out to prove they’re the best candidate to join the European Space Agency. The candidates include scientists, pilots and engineers, all carefully chosen for their ability to contribute to the space programme.
Science-Fiction movies
Showmax has a catalogue of sci-fi films to enjoy. Chill out with the Transformers films, or watch Johnny Depp in the spooky film Transcendence. Satellites that control the weather go rogue in Geostorm. If you enjoy being truly creeped out, Riddick may be your vibe. To see the full catalogue, navigate to Movies / Genre / Sci-Fi & Fantasy on Showmax.com.
