Gomora S2: Zodwa drowns her sorrows again
It seems as though no matter how hard she tries, Zodwa will always find comfort at the bottom of the bottle, sadly.
For the past two years, we’ve seen the Gomora character successfully fight off the urge to take even a drop of alcohol – but this time around, she lost that battle and it’s all thanks to Sibongile.
Back to old habits
Zodwa’s journey to sobriety has been an inspiring one to witness. She was able to beat temptation regardless of all the obstacles life has thrown her way. She seemed to have everything together for a while, but lately, she has found herself swimming at the bottom of a bottle.
It all started when she was having sleepless nights and she believed that Don was haunting her after she shot and killed him. Turns out, Sibongile is the one tricking her into believing that Don is the one causing her sleepless nights.
Zodwa chose to spend New Year’s Eve at Mam’ Sonto’s house as they were hosting a braai. Her sober path doesn’t last long when she decides to drink again. The sad irony of this sobriety setback is that it took one glass to drive Zodwa’s boyfriend, Bongani, away, which is exactly what Sibongile wanted – but little did she know the far-reaching consequences that come with her decision.
Sibongile gets the boot!
Zodwa and Teddy have no idea that it was Sibongile who had been playing tricks on her. Sibongile still blames Zodwa for her father’s death, and she is trying to get revenge by making Zodwa believe she’s being haunted by Don’s spirit.
At first, Zodwa thought all these nightmares were real, to a point where she even hired a sangoma to intervene. Eventually, though, Sibongile felt guilty and confessed to everything. Zodwa didn’t take that so well and she kicked her out of her house.
One step forward and two steps back
When we met Zodwa in the first season of Gomora, she battled a lot with her demons. Her drinking woes led her to lose her son, Teddy, to Melusi and his wife, Gladys. They took Teddy in in an effort to rescue him from her as she could barely put food on the table because of her alcoholism. This all took its toll on Teddy, who was also struggling in school.
She did everything in her effort to finally get her life together, and even got Melusi and Gladys to agree to allow Teddy to come and live with her again. Now, things aren’t looking good for her at all.
An award-worthy performance from Sanna Mchunu
Gomora viewers can’t stop sending rave reviews about the actress’s brilliant portrayal of this role and how authentic she is in every frame.
With everything Zodwa has done to maintain her sobriety, it’s sad to see her in this emotional state. Will history repeat itself as Zodwa battles the demons that come with an old habit?
