American Dad! S14
Father, mega-patriot and CIA agent Stan Smith is the American dad in question in Seth MacFarlane’s genius animated series. It’s a must if you love the dry, irreverent humour in shows like Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers.
While the show centres around the Smith family, it takes potshots at what’s trending in the news, so you don’t need to start at Season 1 to follow the thread.
Family man Stan (voiced by Seth, who also provides dialogue for Roger, the Smith family’s live-in alien) starts off Season 14 being let down when Father’s Day is overlooked. And it’s all downhill from there as his family let him down episode after episode while he continues to protect the USA.
After 13 seasons, production company TBS was so right in greenlighting seasons 14 and 15 at the same time (it’s been renewed to season 17 as well) and the show is a fan favourite in Hollywood – how else did Seth get celebs like Rosie O’Donnell, Wiz Khalifa, Walton Goggins (The Righteous Gemstones) and Susan Sarandon literally begging for voice roles?
Just a note for parents, from Tony Nigro at commonsensemedia.com: “The show’s animated style gives a false impression of its appropriateness for kids. Sexual content, violence and language push the envelope on acceptability, making it a less-than-ideal choice for tweens and young teens.”
