Attenborough: 60 Years in the Wild
When it comes to nature shows, there’s only one name: Sir David Attenborough. He’s the be-all and end-all, the guru, the man everyone turns to for guidance. And for good reason: he’s been doing it for almost 70 years.
60 Years is a three-episode doccie that follows the now-93-year-old Sir David on his adventures as he looks back at his career. Episode 1 is probably the most fun as it relives the most important animal encounters in his career, like the Komodo dragon in Indonesia, with narration by the man himself.
Attenborough: 60 Years In The Wild is not the only Attenborough doccie on Showmax this month. There’s also the 2018 doccie Attenborough and the Sea Dragon – it’s a really cool watch for dinosaur fans as Sir David investigates the fossil remains of a 200 million-year-old ichthyosaur at England’s famed Jurassic Coast. In a fun coincidence, Sir David’s late brother Richard Attenborough played Richard Hammond in 1993 dinosaur movie Jurassic Park.
Both are filmed in full-HD, so they look spectacular. Sir David is a mountain of knowledge and his cool, calm voice draws you in and makes you feel like you’re right there with him in nature, writes Ben Bryant of telegraph.co.uk: “It’s a surprisingly entertaining three hours thanks to the infectious enthusiasm of Attenborough and the enduring appeal of the footage. What gives the grainy sequences value is the insight into how Attenborough and his team navigated the technological limitations of the time, when cameras were suitcase-sized and travel was more difficult.”
