Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) had enough talent when he was younger to become a professional baseball player, but by the time the major leagues started admitting African-American athletes, Troy was deemed too old to play.
Now, in Pittsburgh of the 1950s, Troy makes his living as a garbage collector. He has never forgotten about his missed opportunity, but when it comes time for his own son (Jovan Adepo) to take a shot at playing professional football, Troy ends up squashing his dreams.
Critics praised Washington, Viola Davis, who plays Troy’s wife, and Adepo’s performances, saying, “debuting film actor Jovan Adepo shines…” (IndieWire), “Denzel Washington is a class act, and he has given us a classy piece of work” (Guardian), and “This is a portrait of a doomed marriage that allows its stars to explode”.
This is the film that won Viola Davis her Best Supporting Actress Oscar, BAFTA, SAG Award and Golden Globe, and Denzel Washington took the SAG Award for Actor in a Leading Role.
