Final season of Succession takes home Best TV Series: Drama Golden Globe for the third time
Succession won Best TV Series: Drama at this week’s Golden Globes, as well as Best Actor (Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy), Actress (Sarah Snook as Shiv Roy), and Supporting Actor (Matthew Macfadyen as Tom Wambsgans), having been the most-nominated series overall going into the awards.
This was the third time in four seasons Succession took home the Golden Globe for Best TV Series: Drama. Snook had also won for her role before, but in the Supporting Role category.
The smash-hit HBO drama series follows four obscenely rich siblings behaving very badly while trying to win their father’s approval – and control of his company, a global media and entertainment empire.
In the fourth and final season, the sale of Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson (Emmy winner Alexander Skarsgård) is looming ever closer. It’s a prospect that provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate their diminished cultural and political influence once the deal is completed.
In his acceptance speech, show creator Jesse Armstrong said, “We decided this was the right time to end the show, and that was very bittersweet, particularly for me as I finally bought some shoes that are appropriate for awards dos and this might be the last time I ever get to wear them. No, it is bittersweet but things like this make it rather sweeter.”
This seems unlikely though, as Succession is also the most nominated series overall going into next week’s Emmy Awards.
As Vulture puts it, “Succession. This is the most boring, unsurprising answer to the question, ‘What was the best TV show of 2023?’ It also happens to be the truth.” Everyone from Entertainment Weekly to Time agreed in their best of the year lists.
“Just as The Sopranos and The Wire defined one era of HBO, Succession will go down as the best series of its time. If anyone disagrees, it’s best to ignore them: They’re not serious people,” says The Ringer, calling back to Logan Roy putting his children in their place once again.
All four seasons of Succession are available to binge on Showmax. Showmax has the three most-nominated shows overall at the Emmys next week (Succession, The Last of Us, The White Lotus), IMDb’s Most Popular Series of 2023 and Google’s most searched TV show of last year (The Last of Us), MetaCritic's best-reviewed new series of 2023 (Rain Dogs), and the Black Reel Awards' most-nominated TV series season ever (The Best Man: The Final Chapters), not to mention the most searched series on Google in South Africa last year (Shaka Ilembe), so is on a roll at the moment.
Showmax is re-launching in February 2024 with a brand-new look, new app, and entirely new product suite. This comes after the announcement of the partnership between MultiChoice and international media heavyweight Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky last year.
For fans of international content, the MultiChoice and Comcast partnership guarantees Showmax an ongoing supply of hit content, as the media giant owns the likes of Universal Pictures, NBC, Peacock, Sky, DreamWorks Animation and Telemundo. Showmax will also continue to draw titles from Banijay, BBC, eOne, Fremantle, HBO, ITV, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. Discovery, among others, so viewers can expect international titles on Showmax to radically increase this year.
At launch, international highlights will include Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, two of the 10 biggest box office hits of 2023; the second season of Halo, express from the US; Lawman: Bass Reeves, from Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan and starring David Oyelowo in a Critics Choice- and Golden Globe-nominated performance; missing persons procedural Found, which was NBC’s biggest launch on Peacock yet; Neill Blomkamp’s #1 US box office hit Gran Turismo; and box sets of classic NBC comedies like The Office and Parks and Recreation. It’s also been confirmed that box sets of HBO’s House of the Dragon and the second season of the phenomenal HBO hit The Last of Us will be heading to Showmax in the future.
