HBO’s Los Espookys
HBO’s off-the-wall dual-lingual comedy (in Spanish with English subtitles, and vice versa) is a unique mix of Latin American magical realism and delightfully ridiculous sci-fi/fantasy elements. The show about a group of young people who are trying to figure out who they are, what they want when it comes to sex and relationships, and how their destinies will unfold takes place over only six episodes as the friends embark on a business journey like no other.
With 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, Los Espookys has critics raving.
Collider: “A wonderfully weird and inventive show … embracing bizarre characters, off-kilter humour, and a heady dose of magical realism where the impossible can, and often does, happen. It’s also hilarious.”
Vox: “[Los Espookys] successfully captures the feeling of living in two spaces simultaneously that is often common to anyone juggling multiple selves within their identity – like immigrants, say, or artists.”
Salon.com: “Fred Armisen, [Ana] Fabrega and [Julio] Torres craft an aesthetic that is part magical realism and part candy-coloured circus, sprinkled with enough ridiculousness to make each episode a dose of unfiltered happiness.”
Los Espookys is first and only on Showmax.
