Ice on Fire (2019)
Leonardo DiCaprio executive produced and narrates this HBO documentary, released in June this year. It’s a sort-of sequel to his 2007 documentary The 11th Hour, which focussed on the problems created by climate change. This time, however, the filmmakers look at the cutting-edge technology and innovations aimed at reducing carbon in the atmosphere and mitigating the effects of global warming.
It features impressive scenic shots of far-flung places from Norway to Costa Rica, and interviews people bearing the brunt of the environmental crisis and dedicating their lives to solving it: farmers, scientists and innovators.
Ice on Fire advocates for a two-prong approach to reversing the climate change crisis: using renewable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions and looking at ways to sequester carbon – remove it from the atmosphere and store it elsewhere, in other words – such as taking a new approach to farming.
Visit fascinating institutions like the Usal Redwood Forest Foundation in California, which is working on a carbon storage project that focuses on reforestation, and Climeworks in Switzerland, which captures carbon directly out of the air.
With this emphasis on innovation, Ice on Fire offers some hope that we may, in fact, be able to survive the global environmental crisis after all.
