Journey’s End (2017)
In the dying days of World War One, a group of soldiers is entrenched in an officers’ dugout, waiting for their orders. Their commanding officer is slowing losing his grip, having turned to alcohol to cope with the stress of battle. In the midst of the tension, an idealistic young recruit arrives, excited to have joined their company. The film follows them over four days as they prepare for a raid that could prove deadly to them all.
The film is based on the 1928 play by RC Sherriff, and stars Sam Clafin (Me Before You) as the suffering Captain Stanhope, alongside Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) as the young soldier, Paul Bettany (A Knight’s Tale), Tom Sturridge (Being Julia) and Toby Jones (City of Ember).
Journey’s End scored 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, who said: “Journey’s End brings RC Sherriff’s 90-year-old play to the screen with thrilling power, thanks to director Saul Dibb’s hard-hitting urgency and brilliant work from a talented cast.”
