Made in Italy (2020)

It’s Liam Neeson as you’ve never seen him before in the romcom Made In Italy. When you hear the name Liam Neeson you think of action, high-speed chases, gunfights and a man who will stop at nothing to get justice. And when it’s personal, he’ll be out for revenge!

Now slow your roll for Made In Italy, which just dropped on Showmax. Previously vengeful Liam is sporting a posh British accent as he plays Robert Foster, an artist from London who is trying to fix his relationship with his estranged son, Jack (Micheál Richardson, Liam’s son in real life). We see them getting together in Tuscany, Italy, to repair their family home, as well as to mend their father-son bond. 

This gentle film ticks all the romcom boxes: a gorgeous house in need of renovation, relationships in need of a facelift, a few laughs and, of course, a love interest.

There are also some echoes from Liam and Micheál’s own life. In the movie, the house in Tuscany belonged to Robert’s wife and Jack’s mother, who died in a car accident years back, leaving them still mourning her loss. In real life, Liam’s wife and Micheál’s mom – the actress Natasha Richardson (best known for her role as Elizabeth James in the iconic Disney movie The Parent Trap) – died in 2009 after suffering a head injury while skiing in Quebec. 

Micheál said that at first he was nervous about filming with his dad. “Our characters don’t really like each other as much as we do in real life, and playing that was harder than I anticipated.”

Be prepared for some lighthearted scenes to temper the drama.
