Showmax spotlights Mary Lazarus: The multi-faceted star building a production empire
Mary Lazarus is one of the few who have mastered the smooth transition from one spotlight to another.
Looking at Mary’s superb acting skills, one would not guess she made a career transition from walking the runway to ruling the scenes in movies. Her first appearance in the spotlight was on a runway where she spent seven years modeling and appearing in commercials, including one for MTN.
Through the help of a colleague, Mary made her acting debut in the film,Waiting Years in 2009, and 10 years later had featured in more than 50 films including Letting Go, Field of Lemon, When Hell Break Lose, 2 Rich 2 Poor, and the famous Okafor’s Law, among others. In that time, she made her directorial debut with the film Dance To My Beat in 2017.
Speaking about her career journey in an interview with The Punch, she said, “Years ago after National Youth Service Corps, I got a job that paid N48k monthly. I wasn’t really happy. Not just because of the money, but that wasn’t the career path I wanted. I cried most times as I drove to the office and snuck out sometimes to attend auditions. One day, I made up my mind to resign without having another job; very risky.”

In the same interview, the talented actress described herself as a fun-loving person who keeps her affairs private. As evidenced by her social media pages, the 32-year-old actress seems to cherish her privacy, and except for the occasional birthday posts for her twin brother, Joseph, she keeps her privates private.
In an interview with Vanguard, Mary also shared that her role models are actresses Ajoke Silva and Omotola Jalade, only further proving that great women think alike.
Even though Mary Lazarus can be defined as a paradox of some sort – keeping a low profile amid a flourishing limelight career – she has definitely proven that our happiness lies in our hands and that it’s possible to have the best of two worlds.
