VIDEO: Meet the talented stylist behind the traditional costumes in Grassroots
Whether you’re watching the hopeful young Xhosa men during their traditional initiation ceremony in rural Eastern Cape or meeting a new female principal in the wood-panelled halls of a posh private boys’ school, Princess Fikile Marodi is the talented stylist making sure that the characters’ outfits and colours bring all these scenes together.
The traditional Xhosa costumes required for both the men and women in the Eastern Cape scenes required considerable research in order to ensure accuracy, something she absolutely loved doing. Then there are also more complicated characters like Monwabisi’s mother Funeka, a widow whose lower income, as well as her health problems, are subtly reflected in her wardrobe.
Catch Grassroots every Friday at 19:30 on 1Magic on DStv Now and on Showmax, where new episodes arrive at the same time.
