Remembering Egoli creator and legend Franz Marx
Franz Marx, who passed away on 25 September 2021 from complications related to COVID-19, was one of the stalwarts of South African television. The soap he created, Egoli: Plek van Goud / Place of Gold , gripped the country for nearly 20 years, becoming the longest-running series on M-Net with 18 seasons and nearly 5 000 episodes.
Starting out as an actor before moving into writing and directing, Franz had a hand in many well-known series, including Agter Elke Man (1985-1988). But it was with Egoli that he really captured the hearts of the nation. The series, which was SA’s first daily soap, followed the trials and tribulations of a few families in and around Johannesburg. Writer Leon van Nierop paid tribute to him on Facebook shortly after the news broke.
