Station 19

Every good medical drama needs a spin-off linked to another first-responder job, like firefighters. That’s what Station 19 is to Grey’s Anatomy – a pretty darn good companion series.

It’s set at the Seattle Fire Department’s 19th station, a stone’s throw from Seattle Grace Mercy West hospital where the Grey’s doctors ply their trade – and where the Station 19 characters will interact for crossover episodes.

The action is driven by Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz), a hardened lieutenant who is doing everything she can to live up to her captain dad’s standards. Sure, Jaina has loads of great actors working alongside her, but her drive more than carries the show on its own, especially when she pauses for a breath and allows her softer, more vulnerable side to come through while standing in the middle of a burning building.

How good is it? Charlie Mason from tvline.com writes “no one can say that Station 19 didn’t load up its two-hour premiere with enough kindling to keep the new drama burning for seasons to come. In the first hour alone, the series dished out an accidental marriage proposal, a love triangle, a death sentence, an ersatz Meredith and Cristina and from what we were told, an excellent vegetarian chilli.”
