The Ranakas: Dineo has the sex talk with her niece
If there’s one thing we’ve come to appreciate about Season 4 of The Ranakas, it’s the awareness the show brings to our screens. From family legacies to entrepreneurship and more, the Ranakas continue to offer viewers some valuable and eye-opening content.
Let’s recap this week’s episode.
Let’s talk about sex, baby
Thando decides to join her aunt for a quick “toy” shopping run. On their way, Dineo starts the sex conversation, and, although it may seem awkward, it is what Thando needs to hear. For too long, especially in the black community, sex has been seen as a taboo topic to discuss. However, for Dineo, there is no better time to speak about sex than right now.
“For anyone this moment would be awkward, and trust me it was awkward for me as well. But let’s be real – would you not rather have your nieces, nephews and kids learn from you and seek council from you versus people from the streets?” – Dineo Ranaka
Viewers share the same sentiment as Dineo. It was a very important conversation and both aunt and niece handled it pretty well.
One thing about Dineo: she is the life and the heart of the show. She’s always speaking positivity and educating people at the same time. In her conversation with Thando, she also got an opportunity to learn, together with the viewers, about sex positivity.
The term “sex positive” can be interpreted in different ways. But overall, it’s about having a healthy attitude towards sex and being comfortable with your own and other’s sexual identity and behaviours.
Masiba is the best mother-in-law one could ask for
Masiba impressed viewers when she taught Michelle how to prepare umqombothi (traditional beer). The First Lady took to the kitchen to show her daughter-in-law how it’s done and this was coupled with some deep conversations in-between.
One of the conversations was about the importance of staying true to oneself, even in marriage.
During their bonding session, Michelle felt a bit embarrassed about wearing the proper makoti attire. However, Masiba advised her that at that moment it wasn’t much of a big deal and that she should always remain true to herself.
“If you are our daughter-in-law that doesn’t mean you must change who you are,” says Masiba.
This was followed by Masiba’s reaffirmation about Michelle’s role as a Ranaka wife.
“You are not a man’s slave or a Ranaka slave. You’re the Ranakas’ child,” she said.
The matriarch of the family added that because Michelle is married into the family, she automatically has a higher status than the other Ranaka girls (the sisters).
“Your status is higher than the Ranaka girls. They can cause a racket, but you are above them.”
This caught some mixed reactions from the viewers.
