What to binge in Kenya this festive season
We get it, sometimes the Christmas movies can be a bit much (not you, Home Alone)! Besides, this is the only month when you have all the time in the world to binge all the great TV shows that you haven’t had time to get into this year. So why not make the most of it? Take a break from all the Christmas movies and dive into these must-watch TV shows on Showmax.
Vikings S6
Any fan who’s been following Vikings from the glory days of Ragnar Lothbrok, his many conquests and ultimately joining Valhalla would be wise not to miss the final season. After defeating his younger brother Ivar in battle, Bjorn’s reign over Kattegat is threatened by the ambitious Harald who wishes to become the first King of Norway.
Season 6 also follows Ivar’s exploits in Russia and the new alliances he forms as he runs away from his enemies in Kattegat (and knowing Ivar, he’s bound to create new ones). Also, is this the season where Lagertha meets her fate at the hands of one of Ragnar’s son as predicted by the Seer? Only time will tell. Vikings S6 is streaming First on Showmax; watch it now.
Godfather of Harlem
With an Oscar, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA under his belt, Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) takes on the role of the infamous 60s Harlem crime boss Bumpy Johnson in Godfather of Harlem, a period gangster drama inspired by real events.
Coming back to his neighbourhood after 10 years in prison, Bumpy Johnson finds that the streets he once owned are now ruled by an Italian crime family running a thriving heroin trade that’s destroying the neighbourhood. Godfather of Harlem follows the dangerous rivalry between Bumpy and the mafia as he fights to take back control of his neighbourhood while also forming controversial alliances with famous civil rights leaders like Malcolm X. Start watching.
Watchmen
Superhero series Watchmen is one of the best shows in 2019, and one that is adamant not to erase history when it comes to race relations in America. Based on the iconic graphic novel by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore, Watchmen is set in an alternate reality where masked vigilantes have become outlaws and the police wear masks to protect themselves from being targeted. The brilliant cast is led by Oscar-Emmy-Golden Globe winner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Speak, The Leftovers) playing the role of Detective Angela Abar aka Sister Knight. Watch it now.
Modern Family S1-8
Modern Family’s Pritchetts, Dunphies and Tucker-Pritchetts are not a perfect family but they sure know how to solve their issues, come together and be there for each other when it matters the most. Sure, sometimes they come up with crazy excuses to get out of an important family event but at the end of the day, there’s nothing this family won’t do for each other.
In its 10-year run, Modern Family has dominated the Emmys and given us some of the funniest moments on TV. You can relive the first eight seasons on one massive binge sesh. And if you are looking for an episode to blow your mind, we recommend Connection Lost (season 6 episode 16), a masterpiece that takes place entirely on Claire’s laptop. Binge now »
