Wonder Woman (2017)
Update: Wonder Woman is no longer on Showmax. Browse the full movie catalogue here.
When it comes to superheroes, you need to know your Marvel from your DC. Even though the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) contains an impressive array of characters – Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman and more – it was often considered to be a bit of a runner-up to the Marvel gang of Deadpool, Spider-Man, Captain America and The Hulk, as well as super-teams like the Avengers, X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Then came Wonder Woman in 2017 and changed everything.
With Gal Gadot in the title role, it’s the second live-action theatrical film featuring Wonder Woman/Diana following her debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the previous year. It gives us insights into Diana’s childhood on the island Themyscira populated by Amazon warriors, before transporting us on a non-stop adventure and plunging us into the depths of World War I.
American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crash-lands on Themyscira and after being bound with the lasso of truth, admits to being a spy. Long story short, he and Diana travel to the “real” world in a bid to save it from the ravages of the Great War.
Rotten Tomatoes put the movie fourth of its list of the “Best Superhero Movies of All Time”, and the sequel, Wonder Woman: 1984, is slated for release in 2020.
