Very often, a television show comes and completely grabs everyone’s attention. Showmax’s Original telenovela The Wife is one of those television shows.

If you’re late to what Tagged Online describes as a “foray into the delicious and much-loved telenovela genre”, it’s currently the most-watched show on Showmax. The Wife explores a world so close to South Africans and makes a taxi driver a romantic lead.

From brilliant writing to the most outstanding performances from its cast, here’s why you have to watch The Wife inspired by one of the books of Dudu Busani-Dube, Hlomu the Wife. Read the books in order.

1. A beautiful love story at the helm

Now that Hlomu has ended things with Sandile, we can’t help but admit that Hlomu and Mqhele look so cute together.

We all know the saying that goes ‘bad boys are no good and good boys are no fun.” It’s clear that even with all the red flags already showing and the signs that heartbreak is on the horizon, she still wants to be with the bug-eyed Zulu brother. This brings up Bab’Gumbi pep talk with her when he said, “Mahlomu, you can’t bring a wild dog into your home and tame it. Because one day it’ll turn against you and show you its true nature.”

There’s no denying that these two have wonderful chemistry that we haven’t seen in such a long time on national TV! From the way, Mqhele looks at her to the smothering words that leave her melting. We love to see it and so are the viewers on Twitter streets:

Hlomu is listening to her heart, no matter what people around her may say, she is ready to assume responsibility of a taxi queen. As good as the relationship is, there’s controversy. Qhawe is still not happy about this relationship, and he reminds Mqhele that he’s the one who saw Hlomu first but took his time to make a move. “I know you, you’re my blood. You can’t hold on to anything beautiful. You’re going to destroy her life bit by bit,” says Qhawe.

After all, what can we say, all brothers have their fair share of drama and the question is, will Mqhele be a worthy suitor for Hlomu?

2. Unapologetically a South African drama, with one of the best sex scenes in the history of Mzansi television

The story is filled with plots, twists and turns enough to make anyone fall in love with the local telenovela. This show gets better with beautiful scenes told in the most riveting way.

One of Mzansi viewers’ favourite scenes was when Hlomu gave him permission to break her virginity after knowing him for less than two weeks. Hlomu went against her rules, as she was waiting for marriage, and asked Mqhele to have sex with her. “I want it to be you, I want you to take my virginity, Zulu.”

The scene is helmed one of Mzansi’s best sex scenes. See the magical moment that got Mzansi hooked here, together with reactions from Twitter:

3. Mqhele’s lines that stole Hlomu’s heart

After Mqhele picked her up in that yellow taxi, Hlomu was immediately a gone girl. We share the top five pickup lines that stole her heart. Our charming taxi driver’s pick up lines have also got the streets talking since the premiere of The Wife:

1. Do you like ice cream? (Uyawthand’ u-ice cream?)

Mqhele went to buy ice cream for himself and Hlomu with passengers inside his taxi and a few minutes later he kicked out all the passengers in order to impress Hlomu. Together they went about their day.

2. What the white people call ‘love at first sight’. I never thought it would hit me too. (Loku abelungu bathi ‘love at first sight’, ngangingasho ukuthi ingangishaya nami.)

3. May your day be as beautiful as you are. (Ubenosuku oluhle olufana nawe.)

4. Oh, Hlomu, the beautiful angel who refuses to get out of my mind. (Ingelosi entle bakithi engafun’ uphuma emqondweni wam.)

5. If loving you is wrong, then I don’t want to be right. (Uma ukuthanda wena kuliphutha, ngingamane ngihlal’ ephutheni.)

4. Glowing reviews all round

The show has received lots of love from audiences, especially those who have been huge fans of Dudu Busani-Dube’s books. The compliments have been trickling in from all corners, even among fellow actors and celebrities.

5. The love for the Zulu brothers

You know it’s an interesting show if you catch yourself cheering for each and every character at some point. If it’s not the charming bug-eye Mqhele, it’s the scene-stealer Qhawe or the man with a powerful on-screen presence Nkosana. The viewers can’t get enough of the Zulu brothers.

The hot-headed Nqoba has also grabbed so much attention with an incredible performance from the actor Abdul Khoza.
