Asharia from The Mommy Club: Sugar & Spice on being fearless
Asharia from The Mommy Club Sugar & Spice tells us about shooting the show while three months postpartum, balancing new motherhood with running her businesses, and having to step out of her comfort zone.
What was your first impression of all the ladies?
Everyone had a great aura at first meeting. Each of the ladies have a unique personality, which I love and appreciate.
Watching the episodes, is there anything you would like to clarify?
There’s nothing really I’d like to clarify – all the ladies did a phenomenal job at embracing their true personalities and intentions on screen. It’s important to take everything with a pinch of salt, especially on reality TV.
Who of the ladies do you gravitate towards the most?
I gravitate to all the ladies on different wavelengths; we share a common interest of motherhood – just at different stages of it.
How was your first day filming?
Exhilarating, an amazing experience that definitely brought me out of my comfort zone – it’s a challenge to truly be yourself with a camera crew of 50+ people in front of you that you cannot acknowledge, but somehow i adapted! The human capacity to adapt to change is incredible and undeniable.
Which of the ladies are different on- and off-camera and how are they different?
I would say me! I find that I was presented much more introverted and reserved on-camera – I am a person who speaks when spoken to, and in a production setting it’s more about asserting yourself in conversation (even if it doesn’t concern yourself). I definitely found speaking above the ladies almost impossible and not authentic to who I am.
Besides that, I was also between two to five months postpartum while shooting. I had unbalanced hormones, was 20 kilograms heavier and had a newborn waiting for me to come home – and Veer was my number-one priority at all times. This was the most difficult in particular – trying to balance being a new mom, while filming a reality show, battling with my self-esteem and running businesses. It’s not easy! I look back and think “wow! You really are fearless, my friend.”
The biggest lesson you learnt about yourself while filming?
A girl can do it all, even at three-months postpartum.
What can viewers expect in the upcoming episodes?
The viewers are definitely in for a treat! Tables turn and feathers are ruffled. The ladies ease up, and the cameras are forgotten among the chaos.
Which of your castmates are sugar and which ones are spice?
All the ladies (including myself) are made up of sugar and spice. It’s all about balance.
