Binge your heart out on Love Life Season 2, now streaming on Showmax
In Love Life Season 2, we take the journey from first love to lasting love with three-time Emmy nominee William Jackson Harper (The Good Place, Midsommar, The Underground Railroad), who plays Marcus Watkins, a book editor entering his 30s freshly divorced and lost as ever. Forced to rediscover his identity as a single Black man in New York, Marcus must learn to find love again.
Black Reel nominee Jessica Williams (The Daily Show, 2 Dope Queens, Booksmart), Black Reel winner Kimberly Elise (Diary of a Mad Black Woman, The Mosquito Coast) and Emmy winner Blair Underwood (L.A. Law, Dear White People, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) co-star, along with the likes of Teen Choice nominee Leslie Bibb (Iron Man) and Emmy nominee Janet Hubert (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Vivian Banks). Also look out for Sasha Spielberg (director Steven Spielberg’s daughter) as Lauren, and keep your ears open for the voice of three-time Emmy winner Keith David (Greenleaf, Community and the voice of The Princess and the Frog’s iconic Dr. Facilier) as the narrator this season.
Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, Up in the Air), who headlined Season 1, guest stars and once again co-executive produces Season 2 along with Harper himself and four-time Emmy nominee and hit-maker Paul Feig (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Bridesmaids, The Office).
Season 2 has a 93% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “It’s a smart showcase for a talented actor who seizes it with both hands, giving the rom-com genre a jolt as welcome as it is overdue,” says Variety, while Salon.com praises the show’s “wonderful writing and a superb cast”, calling the show “an absolute pleasure.”
The show also features a real-life curveball that none of us saw coming. “The pandemic affected everybody,” Harper told Deadline. “For a lot of people, this past year and a half has given us a lot of time to be with ourselves. Many of us are figuring out what we’re all about and what’s important to us… That’s something that plays pretty heavily into this season.”
Thankfully, this is a romcom, so there’s plenty to distract us from the heavy stuff, including the hilarious-in-hindsight, cringey moments we all wish weren’t a part of our own love stories, and, of course, the intimate moments between partners.
As natural as they look on screen though, those scenes aren’t easy to shoot. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harper said, “Those things are always nerve-wracking for everybody. You don’t just go for it. You get very clear consent with every single move… Thankfully our intimacy coordinator, Olivia Troy, was very clear about how everything happened, how it had to look, and we locked in with each other and then would joke in between — because it’s awkward having play sex! I mean, that’s just a weird thing to do at work…”
