Call Me By Your Name (2017)
The only thing felt more intensely than love is heartbreak – be it the first time, the last time, or all the times in between. In Call Me By Your Name, it’s the first, the one that will make or break the heart for the rest of its life.
Timothée Chalamet plays 17-year-old Elio, all skinny, awkward angles and the desperate adolescent struggle to articulate feelings in words rather than physical actions. He has the recklessness and sense of immortality of his years, but is also bookish and a musical prodigy.
It’s summer 1983, at a summer villa in Northern Italy when Oliver (Armie Hammer) arrives to assist Elio’s father with his work. He and Elio are romantically and physically drawn to each other over these brief sultry weeks, as the languid heat of summer and lust emanates from the screen.
Things of such intense beauty are not meant to last, like fireworks exploding in the sky before dissipating in wisps of smoke, like they were never there. As the inevitable conclusion of this brief encounter cuts Elio to his very core, his father has encouraging words of advice for him. Tragically, that wisdom can only carry him for so long…
