Elevator Baby and the best Toyin Abraham movies to watch online
Toyin Abraham can do it all: act, direct, write and produce blockbuster films. She shot the AMVCA-winning Elevator Baby while seven months pregnant; she is unstoppable. Abraham followed that with Fate of Alakada: Party Planner the following year, continuing her Alakada franchise where she plays a young lady who has a complicated relationship with the truth.
Abraham started acting in the early 2000s, notably in the Yoruba film industry. She transitioned into mainstream Nollywood and has become a box office champ. Her filmography makes her one of Nigeria’s most versatile actresses; she can bring the charm or up the drama as a caring mum in Nimbe.
Here are some of her best films available to watch online on Showmax.
Kasanova
An unrepentant casanova, Femi, falls for Jessica. Femi’s son schools with Jessica’s daughter, and when the parents fall in love, it threatens the fire burning between their kids.
Why you should watch: Aside from the apparent fact that everyone should watch good romantic comedies, Abraham is hilarious as an overzealous housemaid.
Who’s in it? Wale Ojo, Ireti Doyle, Toyin Abraham.
Nimbe
A detailed look into the cumulative effects of bullying and bad parenting on a child. Nimbe is a parent’s dream: a lovely and gifted kid who never missed class and aces his tests. But constant bullying from his classmates and poor fathering push him to the welcoming embrace of a street gang.
Why you should watch: Toyin Abraham is always refreshing in dramas. Here, she plays a Calabar woman married to a terrible man, bringing warmth to her husband’s coldness. Also, stay for her Calabar accent. It is yum yum.
Who’s in it? Toyin Abraham, Odunlade Adekola, Chimezie Imo, Sani Danja.
Elevator Baby
A woman goes into labour while stuck in an elevator with a privileged young man, who must now help deliver her baby. Elevator Baby explores chance encounters and how situations could change people’s approach to life. The film, written by one of Nollywood’s youngest filmmakers, Akay Mason, won Abraham her first AMVCA.
Why you should watch: Although it packs many life messages, Elevator Baby is an enjoyable watch. A good family dramedy with excellent performances from its co-leads.
Who’s in it? Toyin Abraham, Timini Egbuson, Shaffy Bello.
Seven and a Half Dates
Seven and a Half Dates is a breezy romantic drama about a woman being pressured into marriage after her sister’s engagement. Bisola has a thriving business, but a man is more important to her mum. To solve the wahala, her dad sends her on ten blind dates, hoping one of the suitors will marry her. Of course, it doesn’t go as intended.
Why you should watch: An enjoyable romantic drama that cautions on pressuring people into marriage.
Who’s in it? Toyin Abraham, Mercy Johnson, Sola Sobowale, Akin Lewis.
