Selina, Plan B and more Kalasha Awards 2019 winners to stream on Showmax
It’s official, Reuben Odanga’s Swahili telenovela Selina is the best drama series of 2019. Selina triumphed against other popular productions like Monica, Pete, The Wives and Ithaga Riene to win Best TV Drama at the Kalasha Awards 2019, clinching the award for the second year in a row.
Selina takes them all
A first for the hit TV show was the Best Lead Actor in a TV Drama award that was won by Pascal Tokodi who plays Nelson Mackenzie. Tokodi was nominated in this same category last year but lost the award to My Two Wives actor Eddy Peter.
“I’ve been nominated three times in this category so it’s a relief to finally win. It shows that I’m in the right path as an actor, and a pat on the back is not a simple thing. This is the biggest awards for actors in Kenya so I am super proud. I don’t do what I do for awards but this is a great motivation for me,” Tokodi said during a phone interview.
Tokodi also expressed disappointment that his co-star and on-screen love interest Celestine Gachuhi didn’t win Best Actress but was hopeful about what the future holds for the actress.
Making a Plan (B)
We also had a chance to chat to Sarah Hassan whose debut feature film Plan B won Best Actress (for Hassan) and Best Lighting Technician. Plan B which also features Catherine Kamau (Ma’Empress) and Nigerian Daniel Etim-Effiong (Brethren) follows Hassan as Lisa, a woman who becomes pregnant after a one-night stand only to find out that the mysterious father of her unborn baby is a Nigerian tycoon.
“The love that Plan B has received has surpassed our expectations. And it feels fantastic to win in two categories but even if the accolades were not there, we’d still be doing what we do because of the passion we have. The awards that come with it is just icing on the top,” Hassan said.
Released in February as a Valentines’ rom-com, Plan B is a collaborative project between Hassan and Nigerian filmmaker LowlaDee (This Is It), a first of many according to Hassan who teased more projects in 2020 while praising LowlaDee for her vision and contribution in making Plan B the success it is.
“LowlaDee is such a talented filmmaker so I think everything she touches just turns into gold. It’s an honour to be able to work with her in such projects like Plan B,” Hassan said.
Other Kalasha Awards 2019 winners that you can find on Showmax include the Multichoice Talent Factory Film Ensulo (Best Production Designer), Our Perfect Wedding (Best TV Reality) and Nyanya Rukia which won Best TV Comedy and Best Performance in a TV Comedy for its lead actor Kazungu Fahamu.
