The Marriage Counselor S1
Sean Okonkwo (Kalu Ikeagwu) is a professional marriage counselor who’s lost his job after advising a client to divorce her abusive husband. He’s fired for professional misconduct but somehow manages to blame his wife, Justina (Blessing Onwukwe) for it. After a couple of days sulking, he goes into private service. She will join later and, together, they counsel couples in rocky marriages, but their marriage is rocky too and needs counseling.
The Marriage Counsellor is a thought-provoking series that explores the ups and downs of marriage. It begs the question, who counsels marriage counselors when their marriages are in trouble? Through Sean and Justina, we see how couples who offer advice to others forget the trouble in their backyard. Sean is an astute counselor, but he never practices the advice he gives his client.
We also see the different challenges Nigerian couples do through in their marriages – the man worried about his wife’s body count, the woman who enjoys toyboys and wants to keep her pastor husband. There’s also the man who wants to beat his wife, even during counseling.
The Marriage Counselor was directed by King Asu, and produced by Blessing Egbe and is available to stream on Showmax.
