Unmarried S3, episode 7: Checkmate!
Another week, another major dose of drama from the ladies of Unmarried.
Our mouths are still agape with incredulity and our hands wrapped tightly around us in disbelief. What did we just watch?
At this point, we will need all the memes we can get because words alone cannot accurately express how we feel after watching this week’s episode.
Speaking of this week’s episode, here’s a recap of all that went down.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Funbi’s Dilemma
Through the seasons, Funbi has consistently been going through it. From multiple heartbreaks to losing her baby and even attempting suicide, our girl has no doubt been through a lot.
This is why we were so apprehensive of Iya Funbi’s return and her claims of having cancer.
We really thought Iya Funbi would finally stand up for Funbi and open her eyes to Ali’s manipulative tendencies but alas, a leopard never truly changes its spots.
After returning rather late from the girls’ hangout with Nengi and Kamsi, Ali is not particularly pleased with Funbi. He awakens her with a slap that jolts her right out of her sleep, after reading a text from an old friend who she reunited with at the club the previous night. This confrontation causes Funbi to reflect on all she has been through and she finally starts to see reason with her mother’s distrust for Ali.
Unfortunately, Iya Funbi is now more concerned about getting as much money as she can from Ali and protecting her lies. You should have seen the way she was dancing after he transferred 1,000,000 naira into her account. Ali has successfully bought over Iya Funbi’s loyalty.
Not like it’s surprising that she would put the bag before her daughter, but it’s a bit disturbing how she has become Ali’s number one fan and has started to invalidate Funbi’s new concerns about Ali’s behavior.
This unholy alliance between Iya Funbi and Ali is definitely a disaster waiting to happen.
Nengi takes Bode back
Following her emotional breakdown at the girl’s hangout, Nengi is chauffeured home by an old friend – Bosa. Seeing how much of a listening ear Nengi needs, Bosa offers to take her to lunch the following day and she gladly obliges.
No sooner had Bosa left than Bode the Yoruba demon showed up. Apparently, he had been waiting for her to come home to try and appeal to her once more. But his appeal takes a different turn as he accuses Nengi of replacing him so quickly. The nerve of him! Nengi is not having any of his possessive rants and she asks him to leave.
At lunch the next day, Bosa and Nengi talk extensively about her relationship with Bode and past relationships. He advises that she give Bode a chance since he’s genuinely trying to show that he is separated. Bosa tells Nengi that if she decides to get back with Bode, it must be on her own terms.
Taking Bosa’s advice, Nengi lays out to Bode her conditions for taking him back. He must move out of his matrimonial home, introduce her to his friends, and she wants to meet his family as well as his kids. He agrees to all conditions but is a bit hesitant about introducing her to his kids as he doesn’t want to confuse them but he ultimately agrees to that as well.
We are really not sure how to feel about this latest development with Bode. Lord knows what long game he’s playing.
Kamsi’s quagmire
Aren’t we all just tired of deadbeat Lota?
You will recall that last week, Kamsi asked Lota for a divorce and he was pleading with her to reconsider. This week, seeing as his pleading had fallen on deaf ears, he recruits Kamsi’s aunty and uncle to appeal to her on his behalf.
People of Unmarried, you won’t believe the silly story Kamsi’s aunty tells to buttress her point that it is a woman’s duty to keep her home. She goes on to narrate how Kamsi’s uncle was once unemployed for a long time and even brought his mistress to live in their matrimonial home with them. She further states that with determination and patience, she held her man down and they’ve been together for many years.
What in the world was that cringe-worthy story?
Anyways, our girl Kamsi insists that she will not endure an unhappy marriage to keep up appearances or for fear of what people will say. Queen!
When Lota realizes that all his attempts at pleading have failed, he goes on the offensive and doubles up on his already terrible behavior.
He continues to accuse her of having a lover and even invites his ne’er do well friends to a drinking spree at their house. Kamsi is so livid that she expresses her regrets about marrying him but Lota is unfazed and blames her for all his woes.
The most heartbreaking part of this whole thing is seeing Kamsi so hurt. She is stuck in this toxic cycle with Lota and it is increasingly seeming like she won’t find the strength to leave him.
Will Funbi find out about her mother’s lie? Will Kamsi finally leave Lota? Will Nengi regret her decision to take Bode back? Find out all these and more on the next episode of Unmarried.
